I am new here and not trying to start trouble asking this, but I'm curious. Why do atheists join Christian chat forums? I wouldn't join an atheist chat. Are they here to debate or...? Any thoughts on this?

There are various reasons. Some come here because they are interested in religion. Some are curious. Some are bored. Some come to cause problems. I don't think we can pinpoint a single reason.

I agree that there is not a pinpoint reason. But I am equally confused especially for those who want to cause trouble or ignore the rules of the forum and disrespect. But for those who are genuinely curious and want to understand it can be a good discussion as long as respect is maintained.

they made friends, became part of the online community
and then latter lost their faith

there are several atheists in the Singles subforum who were Christians when they joined this site

The ones who come to cause trouble, do so because they have been hurt before and express their anger by causing trouble. They were probably Christian in the past and ended up being disappointed or emotionally hurt by another Christian. So they come to express themselves thru anger but there is still time and opportunity to be reconciled with Christ. Hopefully our thoughts can show them there is Truth in following Christ, he can heal all wounds. So I pray that we can be the light that he is to us.

Christians do go to atheist forums/chat, and many that do appear to enjoy proclaiming that the atheists are all dammed and will be tortured for all eternity in Hell. It doesn't go over well, as you can imagine.

It depends on the individual. Some are here to seek. Some are here to stir the pot. Others formerly identified themselves as Christian, no longer do, and just stayed.

I agree with LilLamb, this forum actually provides us with a great way to reach out to non-C's. But we should always do so remembering to have both a great deal of respect, kindness, and compassion for those who need the Lord so desperately (1 Peter 3:15) and, at the same time, a great deal of respect for our Lord and Savior and His word (Matthew 7:6). Sometimes it's not what we say, but how we say it that speaks the loudest .. 1 Corinthains 13:1-3 (and that includes how they see us Christians treating each other here at CF as well). If we do those things, the seeds we plant may find their way onto more fertile ground ..

I have talked to a couple of atheists who are simply here to be able to have a good discussion with reasonable, intelligent folks, even if we do hold religious views they are diametrically opposed to. You know what the world's forums are often like, where ugly, unreasonable posts are the norm.
