  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just out of curiosity, what will you Atheists be celebrating this Christmas Day --- if anything?
Although not an atheist, as an agnostic I'll be celebrating the end of most of the junk mail I've been getting for the last five - six weeks. And, the end to the interminable Xmas related shows and commercials on the telly.

Does any show stand out as particularly annoying?

Criminey.
What does this thread have to do with Physical and Life Sciences?
Seriously, WHAT does this have to do with Physical and Life Sciences?!?
You're scientists, aren't you?

You're scientists celebrating something on December 25th, aren't you?

You're scientists celebrating something we don't celebrate on December 25th, aren't you.

Just out of curiosity, what is it?
Off topic thread is off topic
No, it's not --- if you're celebrating some scientific discovery we don't know about --- clue us in.

Well --- that certainly narrows it down, doesn't it?

And atheists celebrating pagan holidays, hmmm.

I think I'll take a drive around town and see if any atheists have a Christmas tree up --- or one of those inflatable Santa Clii.

We have been on a three day celebration. We celebrated solstice on Monday (yea, I know it was Sunday, but it just worked better), Festivus yesterday, and today we celebrate Christmas eve. We celebrate by having a giant slumber party. Everyone pulls their mattresses out in the living room and each night we have a roaring fire (we tossed in the Yule log on Monday).

But to get to the heart of your question, we gather to celebrate our family. Godless heathens also can be thankful. Just not to a nonexistant god.

And this celebration just happens to be on December 25th, right?

Well, it started on Monday. Turns out its easier to celebrate together when everyone has off from work.

And, of course I don't have to tell you that "Christmas" is a holiday made up by Christians to compete with pagan winter holidays, and many of the traditions celebrated on Christmas are an amalgamation of Christian and pagan traditions.

But there's no need to fight over Christmas. You celebrate the birth of your savior, and let others celebrate whatever they wish to celebrate. It's a good time to be civil with your fellow man.

Cheers!

Either that, or God threw those pagan holidays a left curve by having His Son born right smack dab in the middle of them.

Want a scientific demonstration (after all, this thread is Physical & Life Sciences; right, Corvus)?

Take a bowl of water (representing December 25th) and sprinkle pepper (representing various pagan holidays) on the surface --- now just get the tip of your finger wet with dishwashing liquid (representing Jesus Christ --- Joy will do) and touch the surface of the water and watch what happens.
But there's no need to fight over Christmas. You celebrate the birth of your savior, and let others celebrate whatever they wish to celebrate. It's a good time to be civil with your fellow man.
No argument there, my friend. I'm just trying to get a feel for what atheists celebrate on this particular day, and why.

I think some strange threads have been created since (all religions) "Apologetics" has been closed. So, Christians like AV have no other place to turn... Or is "Non Christian Faith" a more appropriate spot for topics like these?
Well, even though this thread is targeted specifically to Atheists, and even though I do believe that Atheism is a non-Christian faith (and apparently you do too), I'd rather have it here, since I'm sure they've got a scientific reason for selecting December 25th to celebrate something.

It can't be something religious, since they argue against the spiritual/metaphysical all year 'round --- so it has to be something scientific --- and I'm just wondering what it is.

you also must realize that december 25th is not his literal birthday, no one knows the day that jesus was actually born.

It doesn't matter --- whether He was actually born on that day, or His birthday got moved to that day --- it is December 25th.

You don't actually think that Christ was born on December 25, do you?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ^_^

I'd love to to hear your rationale for this one, considering that since the Bible doesn't say it, you can't hide behind your mantra. You might actually have to learn something this time.
