At Jesus' Feet
Luke 10:38-42 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.
Here we read about Jesus in the home of Mary and Martha. In the story Martha is busy making preparations for Jesus' stay, and Mary is sitting at Jesus' feet listening to Him speak. Martha gets angry at Mary for not helping her and asks Jesus to tell Mary to get to work. However, Jesus refuses and instead tells Martha that He is pleased with Mary's decision to simply listen to His words.
So often it is easy to be like Martha and become so busy with different activities {especially if there is a large amount of work to do} that we forget to take time out to listen and be like Mary.
But until we start to do this, we will not truly experience the fullness of the relationship that God wants to have with us. We all know that in order to have a strong relationship with a person, both people need to take turns speaking and listening. This is a way to better understand God's will, His will for you.
We all struggle with this need to do good works and listen too. Here is what Jesus told some asking the same question.
John 6:28-29 Then they asked him, What must we do to do the works God requires?
Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.
When you spend time believing and listening for God's will, good works will just flow from this relationship.
There also is a warning about doing good works in the Lord's name without this relationship - without spending time believing and listening.
Matthew 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!
So, let's help each other to remember to spend time at Jesus' feet, spend time believing in Him and listening for His voice, His will, spend time searching for the path He has marked out for us. I know from this time, from this relationship His fruit will appear in His time by His power.
Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore... let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...

Thank You Lord for Your Son the Lord Jesus Christ. Help each of us be like Mary and spend time at Jesus' feet. Thank You that as we do this, as we listen for the good shepherd's voice, we will clearly see the path marked out for us. Thank You also that our relationship with Jesus will grow and bear fruit in Your time, and that You will provide us the strength to persevere. Fix our eyes on Jesus, O Lord, fix our eyes on Jesus, keep our hearts steadfast. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
