• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have recently be refered for an assessment to see if i have an autistic spectrum disorder (although the general idea seems to be that i have aspergers).
I thought these things were usually picked up at a young age; i am 18.
Although my dyslexia was not worked out until january.
So you never know.
But it is good to know that there are people with autism who are religious also.
Apparently one of my aspie traits is that i need proof for everything right down to the smallest insignificant detail, and although i am still exploring the idea of religion, im glad to know that and viewing the world a little differently doesnt get in the way of people believing.

I only got a diagnoses a couple of years ago, in 2006 - I was 23 then. So, that can happen.

You can rest in, God knows how you are, who you are, and the fact that you're searching, He loves that. It's okay to be asking many things, that's good (as long as it's sincere ofcourse). I asked loads of things before I really made some step towards God - and church (That was, in 2003). That was frightening to me, I was very isolated and afraid of people then, so it wasn't trivial to go somewhere, so it took some time before I made that step.

I hope some in that is of help to you

No it did, very much so.
Especially with the fear of people.
I go to an alpha course and although theres only a small election of people there, i still feel hugely overwhelmed.
Im not sure if you are aware of the alpha courses but we had the Holy Spirit day recently and i found the idea of people being so open and praying for me to be a hugely strange and confusing thing, almost threatening. Infact i think i offended a few people by asking them not to - whoops!
But atleast i know im not alone in finding things like going to church on a sunday (which i have yet to do) difficult as apposed to the easiness of others doing so.
I'm used to trying to make myself disappear and these people are so lovely that they want to include me in everything and come and chat. A strange concept indeed.

Good! I did the alpha course too... I came at this church where I still go each Sunday, searching for some place where they did the alpha course. Though I was already in church for a while before the alpha course started. (uhm I could write a bit more on that if you like)
I really liked the Holy Spirit weekend they had!

I don't know, don't be too hard on yourself... I think it's good you said you didn't want prayer yet, being open like that can be hard but it's the best to do

Heh, I sure recognize those feelings of "how are people going to think about me saying/doing this. To me that's still hard at times... but God kinda brought me at a church where people accept me and at times try and support me (and there are some friends there/over internet)

You did an alpha too?
I'd never heard of it until a flyer came through my door. But even non-christians i have met are well versed in the name.

Two of the members of our discussion group for the alpha have an autistic son together. So i am glad that there is someone there who understands that i am not intentionally being rude.

After the Holy Spirit day last saturday when i got a little overwhelmed, one of our discussion group leaders (who also happens to be the youth cell leader) came and suggested i write down any concerns i have if that's easier. Which it was because by that point i had stopped speaking.
Gave her a note on the next alpha night which was this wednesday just gone.

I know ive already said this but it amazes me how accepting church going people are. Since until now the majority of people i had met who were religious were heavily so, and a lot of things were frowned upon. I had this idea that you had to be a perfect citizen to be able to fit in. But hearing the alpha leaders' stories, and seeing the recovery areas on this site for example is hugely relieving.

I didnt have a assesment with my diagnosis for my Aspergers Syndrome ... I was actually diagnosed by the leading Dr who knows a whole lot about it - Dr Tony Atwood. I dont really know about this but I was diagnosed at a young age. Yes it is good to know this :) Ahh, people with AS have different traits like I dont have this trait but one of the ones I do have is trying to control my stress level when someone gets me stressed and sometimes that can be difficult, if I succeed in this I dont throw a tantrum, however if I dont succeed in it, I throw a tantrum. Its good to know that ppl with AS are different and can have different traits, I have met a girl with AS, dont talk about her much but she has some traits that I dont have. The 'viewing the world differently' is another good thing  I can say my AS has given me something to look forward too, it has changed me in ways I can never understand like normal ppl think people in wheelchairs have a kinda disease, well my AS and having spent time with ppl in wheelchairs at a school has made me feel that they dont have any disease, it is what they are born with and I dont have a problem with any of those ppl ;)

I Know what you mean Hazel.
I often do it the other way round though, instead of seeing a positive in a negative, i often notice things negative in good things and then get in trouble for making these observations public.
I recently got suspended from my college for a few months for making a racist comment about a teacher. I am not a racist person by any standards, But apparently openly saying that your teacher is a) the only black teacher b) with a confusing accent and c) unable to pronounce the title of the book she is teaching let alone read it - is a very offensive comment to make. *Shrugs* made sense to me, i liked the teacher but she wasnt particularly happy with me after that (although i didnt know that at the time - apparently thats also an AS thing).
So i guess in a way, if these assessments come back as saying i have AS then its good because people will stop getting cross at me for saying offensive things, not doing what i should be or not understanding why either of those things are wrong :p

ahh ... I didnt know that Holly's Dream :D At least I pointed out how I felt and you dealt with it 100% and you even read it :) I know that making offensive comments is not a part of my AS but I can say this ... different people have different tactics, different symptoms. I knew a kid (last saw her about 2 to 7 years back) who had different AS symptoms than me ... what I am trying to say is if you put 2 different AS people in one room you come up with 2 different people and 2 different lot of symptoms.
