interesting thread.

how can you believe that everything was just "by chance" when everything is SO incredibly find tuned and complex? ive never really undstood that of atheism.

My friend, Evan, another PhD biologist (well, he's not a REAL biologist, he's an ornithologist^_^ ) will answer this one:

Dear Lladybugg,

Life does, in fact, seem very complicated, and at times it is difficult to imagine how it occurred by what you call "chance". However, 'everything' did not come into being through 'chance', but rather by a complicated series of interactions. It is also not a good idea to claim that life is very fine tuned. For instance, it would seem that birds have a very powerful advantage in the form of wings, yet the large majority of extinct species have been birds. If birds had been so well adapted, it is logical to assume that they would all display extremely similar characteristics, what I would consider "fine tuned".

Anyhow, just because we do not know an answer currently does not mean we never will: Christianity has attempted to do this for centuries, and in the process considerably hindered scientific progress.
