  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello everyone. So, I need to work on my thesis all day today but could use occasional breaks. Thus, in the spirit of recent, great threads by Naraoia and Maxwell, here is the microbiological version of ask a scientist!

Disclaimer: I am a bacteriologist by trade (which is a huge field on its own) but do know some stuff about viruses, protozoa, fungi, archaea, etc.. Feel free to ask anything relating to microorganisms and I will answer to the best of my ability.

Hey Jro!

I have read three general microbiology books and by far the one I liked the most was "Foundations in Microbiology" by Kathleen Park Talaro. It is well put together and covers a wide range of topics in microbiology.

It also offers case files of illness at the start of chapters which is a nice touch.

Some good pop science books related to microbiology would be "The Demon in the Freezer" or "The Hot Zone"

"The Demon in the Freezer" deals with Smallpox. It explains its history, its extermination, how it's handled in labs and the bioterrorism aspects of the virus. It is written for the layperson to understand but it is still a very interesting read for the science initiated.

"The Hot Zone" Deals with Ebolavirus, if I remember correctly.

Hope that helps!
