Are you set in your ways or ... ?

OK. There's a saying that the older you get, the more you get set in your ways.

Is this true?

I'd like to know ... in your life, what elements do you keep the same? Which ones do you like to mix up every now and then?

For instance, do you *always* shop at the same grocery store, or would you go to a different one just for the heck of it?

Do you experiment in your cooking, or make the same dishes every week/month?

Do you sit in the SAME place in church every week???? If so ... why?

The list could go on and on...

hmm,I'm not set in my ways so much in the examples you gave, but after being single for 8 years and growing to love my freedom and independence I don't know if I could stand having to account to anyone but God.I think I have become extremely possesive of my time, meaning I love doing what I want, when I want. If I don't want to cook then I don't cook,if I want to stay up all night reading or on the computer then I do(except not Sat. night because have church Sunday morning),I am not sure I want to share my life or my time with another person again. I love it being just me and the Lord, and now a parakeet as well.So I am definitely "set in my ways" in other ways, and I think God would have to work on me to help me change my mind.

Yes, I am very set in my ways. Sit at the same place in church, buy gas at the same station. Eat at the same restaurants.

The list could go on....

I guess I have just gotten use to doing the same things for so long... Plus having a routine is predictable, predictability is often comforting. Sudden changes often get us out of our comfort zone, and cause us problems in life.

No I shop at four different supermarkets depending on what I need.

Experiment? no, I simply cook it. I probably know more recipies than most guys and maybe more than many women.

Always have. I often sit middle right and get to know those sitting around me. My last church we had 2000 people, my new local church has 6000 (same non-denom church; CC), if you move around a lot you get lost

I often watch the same TV shows -- not faithfully, but if I'm going to watch TV, I won't suddenly start watching the History Channel.

I used to like the same restaurants, but I'm willing to go out of my way now. Mostly for social reasons, meaning, I'll have something to talk about if I go somewhere new.

I used to sit in the same place at church, but I've migrated to the other side. Although I like to sit with people I know, our church is tiny anyway. I'm fine sitting alone too. I figure I'm there for God first and socializing second.

OK, here's a spin on the original question:

In what areas of your life are you willing to "mix it up" a bit or do things differently from time to time? And why?

Hmm.... well, by the time one gets to be in their late 30s, a few habits tend to emerge.

Yes, I have certain types of foods, music, clothes, etc. that I like. My grocery cart doesn't change all that much from one week to the next. But I'm not hesitant to try something different if there's a reason to do (other than the sake of change itself). I've moved around a bit, change churches, doctors, barbers, you name it. I mean, heck, why stick with something that isn't satisfying? If I was to ever get married, it would have to be to someone who could accept me as I am. I wouldn't be willing to jump through a lot of hoops to be the person that someone else wanted. Been there, done that, got he whole codependency medallion.

Oh, and Jenster, maybe you should actually try the History Channel once in a while. They actually have some interesting stuff on there... well, at least more interesting than some of the nonsense on Survivor.

History Channel rocks!

Ugh, my life is mixed up enough already! lol I wish I could live to the age of 300+ to dive deeper into all the different things I’m trying to learn, experience or improve on now. Luckily it’s all related in some way so down the road it should all link up into something. I consider myself to be very creative and reasonably clear thinking so variety is not hard to find if I’m looking for it. Such as having visited most of the restaurants in my area, I have my favorite spots so I’ll most often visit those due to cravings and also feel safer going to them (safe from not getting sick), but I know it would take over a year to visit every restaurant in my area though I have visited many of them and have only gotten sick at a few.. not counting doughnut shops which I get sick from half of them, avoid doughnuts with meat in them hehe.

But of course there are things that are fine to be attached to and not feel the need for mixing it up. Myself, I like the area I live in, been around here for nearly twenty years now but there may come a time when it gets too ugly with crime or what ever and I feel the need to move someplace else (but I visit a lot of places). Also, I’ve been using the same drinking cup for thirty years, it’s a neat Star Trek collectable cup. Nothing wrong with being attached to a place, object or even another person and not feel the need to mix it up.

Ah, but Stanfi, you have recently changed your CF screenname, I see! Perhaps you are not as set in your ways after all?

There's no right or wrong answer to this question, BTW. I think we're all built differently, with different needs and preferences. I'm like wildthing and Faith_Warrior, I like to try new things. My problem is trying to stay with one single hobby or passion long enough to develop it. I get interested in one thing, then get completely distracted by another.

For me, security is good, but fear of change (the flip side of the coin) is bad. Trying new things is good, but gluttony is bad.

I don't think I'm set in my ways. I'm really shy, so I'm not to out going. I like cooking the country homemade food, I don't try to many new foods. I'm just a country gal, not into the city taste buds. I like trying new things like different arts, I draw, do oil painting, writing, taking pictures, I love to walk in the fields and take pictures of the nature that's around me. I would rather be on the couch cuddled up in a blanket watching t.v., then at the movies. Now that I go back over reading this, maybe I am set in my ways. hmmm

I am pretty set in my ways. I must admit though I have made an honest effort to step outside my box. Joining this website and posting is something I would have never thought of. I have decided to even buy clothes I normally wouldn't- nothing to be ashamed of but just something not typically me. I know not a huge step but it is a step. Adding variety is good. We only live once so lets live!! Not saying we have to sin but simply live and live to please God!!
