I have (at long last!) been going to a community gym in my city and most people are well mannered with others who also use the facilities there.
A few, however don't, so I thought I'd put up a few suggestions to make it easier for us all to enjoy our gym time as much as possible.
The point in posting on CF is that it is general enough not to be aiming at particular people. I doubt if any of my local folk would be on Cf so nobody reading this is 'in the gun' so to speak (I live in Oz btw!).

  1. Be clean before a session and use an underarm deodorant. There is no appeal whatsoever in days-old BO!
  2. Use a towel or special wipe after using each appliance.
  3. Don't grunt, shriek, scream or groan as you work-out, we all have our personal battles and aspirations, so keep histrionics to yourself.
  4. Don't monopolise equipment. If you rest for any length of time before trying again, let someone else use it meanwhile.
  5. Don't leave barbells, loose weights, dumbells or anything else lying around the floor to be fallen over. Put them away after you.
  6. Weight benches and other specialist seating isn't there for you and your mates to sit on for long conversations. Leave it for others to use in their turn.
These things all happen at my gym and maybe yours too. We all pay for our time there, so are all entitled to equal use of the equipment in moderate comfort and convenience.

Anyone else have these problems where they workout?

God bless you all and keep up the good work!

Sounds like your gym is pretty crowded? I go in the afternoons usually and there is only one or two other people in the weight room then.
I have had those problems at other places, but not where I am now.

Those all sound good except for number 3 which I have a problem with. When I am doing my last rep on my last set, I am going to be pushing my body as hard as I can and there is a good chance that I will be grunting or even exhaling hard which I have a feeling you would group in with that. Each person has their own way of accomplishing their goals.

It's a gym, not a library. Honestly you must be the only person in the world that works out without an iPod or some other MP3 or personal music device. If noise bothers you I suggest you get one, it's also a handy way of avoiding having to give anyone a spot.:)

I have no problem with people making noise.

I do have a problem with idiots sitting on machines and wasting my time. I always interurpt their conversations with a "HEY! How many sets you got left?". Works almost every time. If they give you a super rude look, just stand right next to them till they are done. It will be uncomfortable, but you'll get your machine. :)

I use the squat rack for curls. But not if other people are waiting on it. I think i'm one of the few in my poser gym that actually squats.
OK, I admit I have used the rack for curls too and like you only if no one's waiting. The cage works good for overhead presses, no spotter bench presses etc. - I won't tell the posers that however ;)

I went to overhead (bar) presses for about 6 months of my training. I still did dumbell work but not the heavy stuff...lots of arnold presses and things like it. I think that by skipping (not saying you are) heavy db presses i shot my good bench presses in the foot. Now that i'm back doing db heavy, my bench has mysteriously shot way back up, after 6 frustrating months.

Please use a squat rack or cage for squats not curls!!!

Is it okay to use it for reverse shoulder shrugs? Sometimes if someone else is on the free weight rack, I'll use a squat rack to do reverse shoulder shrugs.

It gives me a wonderful burn and I've noticed some size increase so I've stuck to that. Sorry about that though ;).

I try to be considerate at the gym.
I will admit to hogging the smith machine at times.
Good gosh, I love that thing, you can do EVERYTHING on it...
I let people work in with me on machines though, because I usually rest for at least 30 sec. between sets.
moving on.I dont recall making any strange noises while working out, although I know a couple of guys who like to come in and scream like they are going into labor while squating 600 lbs or whatever they do....
I find it funny....slightly annoying.
The most annoying thing is sweaty equipment.I dont sweat that much, but some people do (especially those on certain steriods.....no names).
So please,if you sweat up the benches, please wipe them off!Gross!

Ha ha.I do that ALL the time.(asking them how many sets they have left)
I'm even bold enough to ask to work in with them if its more than 1 or 2.

^Good to follow up with a big juicy sneeze.
