What does being too religious mean? I see it two ways. If you put up pictures of Christ, saints, crosses and crucifixes everywhere at home for protection. If you believe not kneeing, bowing in sermon or doing the cross sign makes you less of a Christian. If you believe you have to wear shirt or suit in church to be a good Christian.

Believing having crucifixes or images of saints or Christ to be sinful. When you think it's wrong doing the cross sign, knee or bow down in semons as part of the service. When you think it's wrong with a dresscode for Christians.

I think these are two examples of being too religious, one ditch or the other. What's your thoughts?

Whenever I've heard people say that about someone else, they usually mean they're too uptight, self-righteous, or judgemental.

It’s not bad to have religious convictions for yourself. Personally, I won’t display pictures of saints or of Christ in my house (because I would sinning against my conscience by doing so), but I display scriptures, the Word of God happily in my home as a conviction. The same goes for church dress code, personally, wearing the nicest clothes possible is a reverence for the house of God in my own convictions, so not wearing good apparel is to not strive in well doing, personally.

The problem is not being “too religious,” or too zealous, but the problem is being over burdensome toward others and making them hold to your personal convictions, I think.

The opposite of too strict is also a problem....

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. - Revelation 3:14-16

I think all things can get out of hand and become too much. Things can easily become something it´s not intended to be. Our minds have a life of it´s own, it loves habits, and sticking to the same thinking patterns. Being too religious in my view is someone who has lost common sense and loss of normal critical thinking. Someone who is overly sceptical of everything, people who see ghosts everywhere, even when there are none. People can become blinded by faith, like people can become blinded and addicted to everything else in this world. It´s a science keeping both feet on the ground.

I think ‘too religious’ is when you’re doing whatever you’re doing or not doing because you think that you have to to be ‘religious enough’ not because you want to. Like if you wore a suit to church because you think you ‘have to’ rather than because you desire to wear your nicest clothes for God. Or giving to poor because it ‘says so’ rather than desiring to help them.

Amen! I personally want the Lord to lead me to follow all his ways and many people would call me too religious yet very imperfect I have and continue to learn not to put my ideals on others .One must listen and obey the Holy Spirit and Gods word. Yet if we do so with grumbling or w/o love that in is not God's word.

It would seem that each of those would be a case of worshiping religion rather than the Creator; it's essentially falling into a ditch of superstition which gets promoted by peer pressure, so that the blind end up all following each other around in the ditch.

As shown in the book of Daniel, practicing a genuine relationship with Jesus and God can be done steadfastly anywhere so long as the HS draws you to it, whether in persecution or safety, at church or one's house, whether in exile or not. And it has little to do with the trappings of organized religion.

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27
