“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.’” (Matthew 16:24-27 NASB1995)

[Cf. Luke 9:23-26; Mark 8:34-38; John 12:25-26; Romans 8:17: Philippians 3:10; Galatians 2:20; 1 Peter 2:21; 2 Timothy 2:11-12; Romans 6:6; Matthew 10:38; 1 Corinthians 9:24-27; 2 Corinthians 4:10-11; Luke 14:27; John 15:18-20; Colossians 3:3-4]

There are many people professing faith in Jesus Christ, convinced that their sins are all forgiven and that heaven is now guaranteed them when they die, but they have not died with Christ to sin. They have not been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness. Sin has not been put to death in their lives, but they are continuing to live in their sins, doing what their evil hearts desire, deliberately and habitually, for they believe the lie.

Some of them may make a pretense of having put sin to death in their lives, while secretly they continue in their habitual sinful practices. Among them are many who are habitual liars, deceivers, manipulators, fakes, malicious, morally unclean, opportunists, and untrustworthy egomaniacs whose pride and selfishness keep them locked into their sins while outwardly they profess to be followers of Jesus Christ. But they are not followers of the God above, but of the gods below who convince them that God will not judge them.

Some of them may go through the motions of religious practice while their hearts are far from God. They regularly attend religious gatherings, and they may even be involved in what are called Christian ministries. Some of them are even pastors, elders, and deacons of “church” congregations. But secretly they are still living to please the flesh, and not God, for they are serving the gods of this world, and not the God from above who created us and who made us to be a people who would worship him with our lives.

And the Lord may be speaking to some of them, warning them that if they continue on their sinful course that they will die in their sins and that they will not have eternal life with God. He may be calling out to them to repent of their sins, to die to sin daily, and to follow him in walks of obedience to his commands in daily practice. And they may even give a show (performance) that they have done that. But then it comes out that they did not do that, but they kept on in their sinful course and just covered it up with lies.

Honestly, this is where many are who profess faith in Jesus Christ, convinced that God is going to let them into his heaven when they die, but while they continue to live for self, and not for God, while they live on this earth. And this doesn’t have to include really offensive and outrageous sinful practices. This can be people who just live to please their flesh, and who do whatever they want to do with their lives without regard for what God wants for their lives. For they are still the lord and master over their own lives, not God!

So please take this passage of Scripture in Matthew 16 to heart, for this is the will of God for our lives. If we want to come after Christ, and to be his people by faith in the Lord Jesus, then we must deny self, die daily to sin, and follow our Lord in walks of surrender to him as Lord, in obedience to his commands. And this is not saying we will never sin again (1 John 2:1-2) but that sin must no longer be what we practice, deliberately and habitually. But now surrender to God in obedience to his commands must be our practice.

For if we choose to hold on to our sinful lifestyles, we will lose our lives for eternity. Heaven will not be our eternal destiny. Hell will be where we are headed, instead. But if we die with Christ to sin and to self, and we now submit to him as Lord (Owner-Master) of our lives, and we now walk in his ways, doing what he commands, by his grace, and if we continue in these walks of faith to the end, then we have the hope of eternal life with God. For we are all going to be judged by God in the end, according to our deeds.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

I am doing nothing of the sort. I am sharing what the Scriptures teach. What specifically did I say that you take issue with? Give me the quote.

You made this lovely case for righteousness..."So please take this passage of Scripture in Matthew 16 to heart, for this is the will of God for our lives. If we want to come after Christ, and to be his people by faith in the Lord Jesus, then we must deny self, die daily to sin, and follow our Lord in walks of surrender to him as Lord, in obedience to his commands"
But then annulled the whole thing with..."And this is not saying we will never sin again"

You make it seem as if it is pointless to "deny self, die daily to sin, and follow our Lord in walks of surrender to him as Lord, in obedience to his commands".
You make it seem impossible.

The good news is that it is possible to submit to God 24/7, and every day, week, month, and year !
By saying..."And this is not saying we will never sin again", you accommodate failure.

Not me. It is what the Scriptures teach. I John 2:1-2 says: "My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world." And then in 1 John 1:6-7 says: "If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." So here it lets us know that if we walk in sin (make sin our practice) that we do not have fellowship with Christ; with God. And then we have a ton of Scriptures which warn the church to let go of their sinful practices, to put them away, to forsake them, to cast them off so that they can run the race God has for us to run and so we will not be among those who make sin their practice and thus will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. And then we have examples in the Bible of Christians who sinned and who needed to repent of their sins and to turn back to God, and on and on. If you read the whole of the New Testament book by book, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse, it will all come together for you. And here are some verses you could start with:

Bible verses about the church, the body of Christ, and how we are to minister to one another, so this will cover the fact that it is possible for a Christian to sin, but it is not permission to keep on sinning: [Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:15-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20]

Bible verses that teach us the meaning of salvation, what we are saved from, and what we are saved to, and how we are to put sin to death, cast sin off, cease from sinning, and now obey God: [Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

The New Testament Scriptures are loaded with descriptions and lists of sins so that there is no question as to what sin is and what sin is not. Jesus died on that cross and he rose again to free us from our slavery (bondage, addiction) to sin so that we will now walk in holiness and in righteousness in walks of obedience to his commands. While it is humanly possible that a genuine Christian might sin, at some point, not one of us is to be deliberately and habitually sinning against our Lord, refusing to obey his commands so that we can still walk in sin. If sin is what we practice, and not obedience to God, we will not inherit eternal life with God.

You do say while it is humanly possible that genuine Christians might sin, at some point . You say ( MIGHT) ??? I do say that, that the MIGHT you mention is absolutely unsustainable. For every Christian do commit in thought or deed sin everyday. It be the God that barest the fruit and not of ourselves. We be saved by the blood and forgiveness of the God. I do say be careful not to go down the path of Christian perfectionism or the Mr Charles Spurgeon might have to jump on your foot and you scream real loud and maybe even curse : ) yours Kathleen

Not true! Not according to the Scriptures. for if sin is our practice, and not righteous living, and not walks of obedience to our Lord and to his commands, we do not know God, we are not in fellowship with Christ, we are not born of the Spirit, but we are still of the flesh, and we will not inherit eternal life with God. Read what the Scriptures teach. Read them in their appropriate context, and you will find this to be the truth.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

Well Christsfreeservent That still doesn’t change the reality that Christians wilfully or unwillingly think and do sin everyday. How many abide by all those bible verses you mention. None. All except maybe you : ) perfection begins when we take on immortality. The verse you mention are a check on how we should live our lives nothing more.

I don't think it is an accommodation to failure, but rather an acknowledgement of our state in this life. We will never be absolutely perfect and without sin in this life. This is why our Lord gave us the Sacrament of Confession, so that we could acknowledge our failures, receive forgiveness of them and restoration, and get and once more strive to overcome that which besets us.

The holiest of saints went to Confession regularly. On his deathbed, Saint Anthony was heard to be pleading with the angels for a little more time to repent before being taken to God. This was a man who lived a life of extreme asceticism, prayer, and fasting, and when his disciples said to him, "Father, you have lived a life of repentance, surely you do not need further repentance," he responded, "Truly, I do not know if I have even begun to repent."

The more close to God one becomes, the more holy one becomes, the more aware he/she becomes of their failures and sins. Those who think themselves righteous in this life and without sin to deal with or the need for repentance are in denial and delusion.

Not me. It is what the Scriptures teach. I John 2:1-2 says: "My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world."
The "anyone", are those not in Christ. For if they were in Christ, or the light, it would show "sin in Christ"...which is not possible.
And then in 1 John 1:6-7 says: "If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." So here it lets us know that if we walk in sin (make sin our practice) that we do not have fellowship with Christ; with God.
First of all, the word "practice" is unscriptural, and was introduced by accommodators of sin.
One sin shows that a man is not in fellowship with God. (v6)
It also shows that a man is not in the light, (v5), and that he cannot say he has no sin, (v8), or that he even knows God ! (1 John 2:4)
John is using an A, B, A, B, A, B, style of writing that juxtaposes one position in direct opposition to another.
The two positions of 1 John 1 are walking in the light-God, or, walking in darkness-sin.
Verses 5, 7, and 9 address those walking in God...or about to start walking in the light-God...confess first before entering God-light.
Verses 6, 8, and 10 address those walking in darkness...which Pro 4:19 says is "the way of the wicked".
(Paul uses the same style of writing in Rom 8, with the positions being in the flesh or being in the Spirit.
We cannot be in both at the same time. )
And then we have a ton of Scriptures which warn the church to let go of their sinful practices, to put them away, to forsake them, to cast them off so that they can run the race God has for us to run and so we will not be among those who make sin their practice and thus will not inherit the kingdom of heaven.
That is for sure, but you erroneously call those walking in darkness "the church".
The sinners aren't really in the church, they are in darkness.
And then we have examples in the Bible of Christians who sinned and who needed to repent of their sins and to turn back to God, and on and on. If you read the whole of the New Testament book by book, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse, it will all come together for you. And here are some verses you could start with:
Those walking in darkness are not in Christ.
They are only posing as members of His body.
If men are sinning, they have not even repented of sin ! That is the very first step to Christianity.
They are imposters, sent to malign the reputation of the body of Christ.
Yep: and those who refuse to yield to God, will be destroyed.

I don't think it is an accommodation to failure, but rather an acknowledgement of our state in this life. We will never be absolutely perfect and without sin in this life.
I disagree with your POV.
This is why our Lord gave us the Sacrament of Confession, so that we could acknowledge our failures, receive forgiveness of them and restoration, and get and once more strive to overcome that which besets us.
If one's repentance from sin is real, they won't sin again.
God has given us everything we need to keep walking in the light-God.

Thank God, we of the NT can walk in "newness of life". (Rom 6:4)
Reborn of God's seed, and free from the characteristics of Adam's seed. (1 John 3:9)

I disagree with your POV.

Then you are disagreeing with the saints of God over the many centuries of the Church. I would rather trust them than someone who has come along some 20 centuries later and feels he has discovered something that the Church has missed for 20 centuries.

I won't say what I really think about your ideas, since the mods would be on me like a tick on a dog, but it is simply wrong. If there was the idea that we would never sin again, then we would not need the Sacrament of Repentance and Christ would not have given the Apostles the authority to forgive sins in that Sacrament.

That is your prerogative.

What do you think of Peter's words in 1 Peter 4:1-2..."Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God." ?

If this meant what you claim it to mean, the first century of Christians and those who followed them would have made your teaching into a doctrine. They did not, therefore, those who were taught by the Apostles have a much clearer understanding of what this means than anyone else and I follow them and what they teach.

This kind of thing is the same as the Protestant claims that the Eucharist is not the real Body and Blood of Christ, but is a memorial meal of grape juice and crackers meant to remind us of the Sacrifice of the Cross. Just as I said above, the first Christians had no such idea of the Eucharist, and were very clear in teaching that it is the Body and Blood of Christ. Since they lived much closer to the Apostles than we do, and learned from them, such as Polycarp being a disciple of John, what they say has weight and those ideas that have come up in the last 500 years have no weight at all.

I honestly hope you don't think that you are living a sinless life.

We are ALL sinners. We ALL sin. Even a bad thought can be a sin. Doesnt have to be a big thing.

This is where we can turn to God and ask for forgiveness, just like the Prayer that Jesus gave us.

Jesus knows that we are weak. We can never attain perfection on this earth.

I am a sinner. I aint perfect at all. When i do sin i turn to God and seek forgiveness...i try not to sin though.

They did not, therefore, those who were taught by the Apostles have a much clearer understanding of what this means than anyone else and I follow them and what they teach.
The early Christians didn't need to turn love for God into a doctrine, as it came naturally.
But if you want to see Godly obedience mentioned as a doctrine, look at 1 Tim 6:3-5..." If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself."
This kind of thing is the same as the Protestant claims that the Eucharist is not the real Body and Blood of Christ, but is a memorial meal of grape juice and crackers meant to remind us of the Sacrifice of the Cross. As long as a man's teachings don't accommodate sin, no harm is being done.
I honestly hope you don't think that you are living a sinless life.
Why would you hope for such a horrible thing ?
It is written..."Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame." (1 Cor 15:34)
I honestly hope you will take Paul's plea to heart !
