Give him a map of the state he'll be travelling in. I mean, a real state map or a road atlas of the USA. Even the most bored traveler can find something interesting on a map. And if he asks "how much farther?" they don't have to answer that annoying question anymore, they can tell him to look at the map.

When my children start bugging me with "How much longer'? I increase the time each time they ask. It will be 5 minutes. It will be another 10 minutes. Oh about a half hour or so. etc etc.Eventually they gett the idea.

I was an "intelligent donkey" type child. Instead of the typical "when are we going to get there," *I* would ask, "How many more miles?"

With seven kids, Patrick, I'm sure you also used the "Don't make me stop this car!" tactic, too!

There's a great mystery, which is that a lot of kids go through a fairly long phase where "soon" doesn't mean anything to them, but *any* specific answer will work. So, for instance, if they say "when can..." or "when will...", you just say "Tuesday", and they're happy; they know that it *will* happen, at some time, and they don't really know when, but that's okay, Mommy knows when.

When my children were young, Batman (Adam West etc) was all the rage and they watched every one on TV.

So when this question came up (as it did), we always told them by the number of Batman programmes (3 Batman programmes to go, 2 batman programmes to go...) and it seemed to satisfy them.....
