Are we subcontracting the RED CROSS to do our work?

Christianforums has thought it appropriate to provide a large link to the Red Cross on it's homepage. At quick glance, one commends them for wanting to help the victims of Katrina. But after a few seconds, I recognized the horrible reality. The Red Cross, and not Christian churches, are providing the help. Is this not a site promoting Christianity? Are there no churches that are accepting donations to help out? If there are, why is there link omitted, while the charitable, yet religionless, Red Cross is positioned in clear view?

Strange liars we are, huh?

You ought to put this on the GT forum and see what response you get as well. I agree with you. We are letting the Red Cross be the Good Samaritan instead of getting out there and helping the poor sick person on the side of the road.

Lutheran World Relief is responding to this disaster and could use much of our resources. LWR along with Catholic Charities have the best reputation in charitable work. It is also good to note that while we assist in this cappacity that we not neglect the poor in our neighborhoods.

That's typically lutheran. I'm a VIC at two local prisons, state and federal, maximim security and there are no lutherans at either doing prison ministries. Where would an x-prisoner go when he gets out when he's ministered to? Usually not a lutheran church. Wouldn't look right with an x-con hanging around. What would people think. This is the first year that LCMS initiated an outreach to prison and it had a low attendance. Writing a check and letting someone else do it is easier.

As a mod, I can say, I don't know if this thread will be allowed to stay. . .but, I personally don't have a problem with it whatsoever. All I can tell you is that somebody suggested that a link be put there.

I have issues with the Red Cross. . .they're not exactly the best organization in the world, albeit a good one.

I gave through Thrivent to go to LWR.

I'd think we could get one person from each denomination that would know the charities. . .but, who knows.

I'd rather promote World Vision and Compassion International than the Red Cross if I had my choice. I saw people from both organizations when watching the news.

Lutheran Disaster Services is providing help throughout the Southeast. Our church sent five truckloads of stuff to Mississippi the day before yesterday. It arrived at a shelter at Christus Victor Lutheran in Ocean Springs and was immediately distributed. The Red Cross is a wonderful organization, as is Lutheran Disaster Services. Both are needed and very helpful.

My father (was not a Christian) always supported Salvation Army. When he was overseas during WWII, he said it was always SA that brought relief for the troops. He never did see any Red Cross workers/work, except when there was a show tour with Hollywood celebrities who visited. And even then, RC seldom paid attention to the foot soldier. ... At least that was his experience.

Let's hope they have done better in recent years. :)

Ken, I don't like the term "refugee" either. . . they aren't, they ARE evacuees. I know that they did "leave to escape danger," but it gives it a whole diffent sound to call them "refugees" which usually is related to leaving a country to escape danger, power, persecution. . .I wish people would quit calling them refugees, too.

As for the Red Cross, yeah, a good organization, but I still have major issues with them.

My dad (a Roman Catholic  ) always has and continues to support the Salvation Army as well. He was a paratrooper during the Korean War...says the EXACT same thing. Never saw the Red Cross except for the big show tour but he had glowing things to say about the Salvation Army. :)

Joel Brondos posted in his blog once that it was inappropriate to support the Salvation Army because their theology was wrong and a tainted Christian message was worse than no Christian message. Last year I donated all of my United Way funds to the Salvation Army...at least that way they wouldn't go to agencies supporting abortion. Now I don't know what to think...ChiRho says no to the American Red Cross, Brondos says no to the Salvation Army...I am guessing Catholic Charities (which is an option on my United Way forum) would get plenty of flack as well.

It looks as if no one can win this game...but any group that attempts to do good is subject to criticism of one sort or another. Sometimes we just have to do the best that we can do and if our support decision is wrong...well, we are forgiven.

Yeah, I think Luther said something to this effect: "Sin Boldly" - and this is the proper context to apply it. :)

I don't hesitate to give to the Salvation Army, especially in these circumstances.

In Christ's love,

For a while I didn't support the United Way because of their stand on the Boy Scout controversy of a few years ago. Since coming back to the Lutheran Church I have a different perspective on the Boy Scouts so I may consider giving to them or just giving to LCMS world relief.

If you consider that God may use whomever he wishes to give aid and comfort to those in need the SA is a good place as any.
