Are we really new creations in Christ if we struggle with not committing sins of flesh we once did before we became Christians?
-
A believer is a new creation because the dead spirit has receive the eternal living Life of God. Which is the new creation, The Spirit of God. Whether you sin or not sin the Spirit of God resides. So a person as an earthly believer, may let the sin nature rule their lives or they may let the Spirit of God rule their life.

A New Creation is a person who was transferred from Spiritual death to Spiritual Life. How? Spiritual Circumcision. For some reason, the church doesn't like to teach this. Pretty crazy . . . the below seems pretty important to know.

Colossians 2:11-13 NLT - 11 "When you came to Christ, you were "circumcised," but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision--the cutting away of your sinful nature. 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins."

Yes... but it is only our spirits that are born again and made new creations. Our mind and flesh need to be dealt with on a daily basis. We crucify the flesh and renew the mind. This will continue your whole life.

only the words of God speak truly, men are incapable of the same.

We are either yet in the flesh or not in it, there is no inbetween, Christ is the Spirit, why believe fleshy speaking man. ( all on this forum)

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

I see answers that are all over the place.

14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation
New American Bible, Revised Edition. (Washington, DC: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2011), Ga 6:14–15.

14 For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore, all have died. 15 He indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
16 Consequently, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh; even if we once knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no longer. 17 So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. 18
New American Bible, Revised Edition. (Washington, DC: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2011), 2 Co 5:14–18.

16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18 Freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness.
New American Bible, Revised Edition. (Washington, DC: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2011), Ro 6:16–18.

22 But now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification, and its end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
New American Bible, Revised Edition. (Washington, DC: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2011), Ro 6:22–23.

I think that it is clearer to say that when we become a member of the People of God,
our slavery to sin is broken. Now, we have new options, in the way in which we
live our life. We should be choosing not to sin, and choosing to live out
righteousness. and this we can do, with god's help.

1 My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. 2 He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. 3 The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: 6 whoever claims to abide in him ought to live [just] as he lived.
New American Bible, Revised Edition. (Washington, DC: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2011), 1 Jn 2:1–6.

1 John 3:4-10
"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother."

As new creatures and IF we are truly saved there WILL be a change. "Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." Luke 13:3 & 5
Righteousness & holiness is a MUST for the true believer in Yeshua, Jesus.
What does Heb. 12:14 say? "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord"

If someones not seeing change or "struggling" with sin, it's time to get serious, examine yourself whether you be in the faith, and cry out mightily to God to save you and cleanse you from ALL filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God - 2 Cor. 7:1

Are we really new creations in Christ if we struggle with not committing sins of flesh we once did before we became Christians?
Before we became born again of the Spirit of God, there was no struggle between the flesh and the Spirit, because we were dead in our transpasses and sins. Therefore there was no struggle. We sinned and enjoyed it, and our only fear was getting caught and punished if it was against the law of the land, or if we were immoral there was the fear of disease. We were entirely in the flesh and our lifestyle consisted in the acts of the flesh as described in Romans 5.

It was only when a Christian worker presented the Ten Commandments to us and asked us if we were good people in relation to those Commandments. When we realised what God's law said, we realised that we had sinned against Him. Paul said when the law came to him, sin entered and he died.

When a person receives Christ as Saviour and accepts that Jesus took the penalty for his sins when He died on the Cross, and is baptised in the name of Jesus, he is instantly filled with the Holy Spirit and he becomes a totally new creature in Christ. Then he hates sin and starts to struggle against it for the first time in his life. But he realises that there is no condemnation for him in Christ, and he is set free to grow in grace and in the knowledge of God.
