It may sound like a dumb question but I'm just trying to get straight in my head the differences between Anabaptist, Southern Baptist etc. As far as I know we just have 'Baptist' in Australia.

Here's a statement of beliefs set out by the Baptist Union of Australia: http://baptistnsw.asn.au/about/faith

So yeah, are there any differences?

Thanks, Lauren :)

The bottom line, Lauren, is that all Baptist Churches, regardless of what soil they might find their foundations rooted in, should be following the Bible and its infallible teachings. therefore they should be judged according to that "tradition" alone. If they follow the God-given tenants of Christianity, if they are rooted in Scriptural Truth, and if they are visible examples of Christian Love, then they are sister Churches to all others (minor unimportant differences notwithstanding).

Yeah, I know that and agree... But I'd still like to know :)

I'm finally getting a grasp of how Anglican churches (in Oz at least) are run (from my boyfriend, a good Anglican friend, and my pastor who grew up in the Anglican church :)... its all small differences I know, eg I'd say my boyfriend's church is fairly similar to mine- different denom and all... but still good to know :D at least i like to know, cause means i have a better understanding of it. I like to know how things work :) (most of the time).

So yeah, maybe i should rephrase it as what in particular is going to make a church anabaptist or southern baptist :)

I can't post links yet.

:(

If you'll type "southern baptist statement faith" into Google the first link up is the Baptist Faith and Message. It is the Southern Baptist's summary of the faith.

To me it seems that most of the lines drawn by the differing baptist groups run the gamut from liberal to conservative in their approach to the scriptures. That's the biggest difference I can find.

FTR - we went on a mission trip to South Africa one year. Those baptists were like us. We also went on a mission trip to Colorado. Those baptists were VERY different.

The South African baptists were warm, loving, welcoming. They were also the poorest of the poor.

The Colorado baptists were very aloof. They were also very wealthy.

It's just too bizarre.

Baptist and Anabaptist are not the same denomination.

Baptist could include: freewill, Southern Baptist, American Baptist, Independant Baptist, and so on. The Anabaptist are not a denomination of Baptists and Baptists are not a denomination of Anabaptist.

For more information on this... I'll dig through some threads and post a link here.

I don't know much about Australian baptists. Here are a few quick descriptions of the other groups you mentioned.

Anabaptists (1525) - Reject infant baptism. Persecuted by Catholics and Reformers. Modern day Mennonites, Amish, Hutterites, Brethren.
Baptist (1609) - John Smyth. England. Separatist puritans that emphasize believer's baptism and congregationalism. Aussie Baptists are probably descended from Baptist churches in England.
Southern Baptist Convention (1845) - An association of Baptist churches that separated from the General Missionary Convention of the Baptist Denomination of the United States around the American Civil War, primarily over slavery which they have since changed their position on. They also happen to be the largest association of Baptist churches in the world.

I go to an Independant Baptist church here in Australia. No union. The book I have from the church says this, hope it helps show you the differences.

{The assembly is local.

The word church in the Bible is always used in connection wiith definate, geographic localities. (for example Roams 16:1: 1 Cor 16:1, 9; 2 Cor 8:1; Col 4:16; 1 thess 1:1; 1 Peter 5:13, Rev 2:1,8,12,18)

The Bible does not speak of a universal or world-wide church. The New Testament speaks of many churches meeting in different locations.}
