I have watch my Grandmother and my Mother can for many years, but I just did not take it up. I have been wanting to do this for awhile now, just to try too keep up this art. I just got a cookbook on begining pressure cooking. I hope to get to the point that I will can veggie and jellies one day. I also what to do main meals in it too. I am still trying to make up my mind on what size and brand cooker to start with. Does anybody do is that they can share with me on how to start ot how they started. I have talked to my Mom some, but she just does not do it as much as she used too. ;) I want to start with just bean and some meat and work my way up.

Pressure cookers are a great and economical way to cook. I have been using a pressure cooker for 34 years. We (my husband and I) make everything from rice puddings to soups and casseroles and Christmas puddings in the pressure cooker. I also make jams and marmalades in it too.

Prestige are very good but check on availability of spare parts for whichever brand you chose. We now have a stainless steel pressure cooker. Also, see what the recipe book is like. Although we have a Tower pressure cooker now I still use the Prestige recipe book.

I hope this helps. Enjoy!!

Thank you for your post, I was begining to think no one use pressure cookers anymore. I have looked at so many cookers, what I am trying to make up my mind now is what size cooker I want. I want one that can atleast cook a whole chicken if I want. I book I have is a book that starts from the beginning. Simple. I love it when my Grandmother made brown beans in the cooker, I can't wait to do it. What is the most simple thing I can cook?

Thanks!!!

God Bless

IMHO, most things are simple in a pressure cooker. Why not try making soup or a rice pudding? When making things like that tho' you have to learn to be patient and leave the pressure to come down before you take the pressure off or you will find most of your recipe on the kitchen ceiling.

Why not do a search about pressure cookers to find out what is available? I am in the UK so I don't know exactly what is available where you are. If you want to cook chicken then you will need a good size pressure cooker. You might even prefer a high dome pressure cooker.

Please let me know how you get on.

I have been reading the cookbook and I have made up my mind to cook brown beans as my first meal in the cooker. I don't think this will be to hard for me do and mess up on. I had been looking on the web at many pots and had gone to wal-mart and other stores to find the one I wanted. I pick out a 5 qt micro cooker. There was a smaller one that I might get later.

Thanks for the help.
