• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

O.O That's an awful story.

However, no, I don't think pitbulls are inherently "evil." I think that for someone to have three dogs that snapped like that probably says more about how the dogs were raised. In my experience only dogs that have been in some way abused turn out to be psycho. It is possible the noise the neighbors made and the screaming further confused the 3 dogs. Not that I'm blaming anyone for either action,it is just in my experience that just further upsets the animal.

As with any animal people should be careful how the treat it, as they can be dangerous.

I also seen a bunch like this about pitbulls. are they evil?

pitbulls are NOT inherently evil.

 • Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog. The owner most often is responsible -- not the breed, and not the dog.
 • An irresponsible owner or dog handler might create a situation that places another person in danger by a dog, without the dog itself being dangerous, as in the case of the Pomeranian that killed the infant (see above).
 • Any individual dog may be a good, loving pet, even though its breed is considered to be likely to bite. A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack. My short answer is: NO, pitbulls are not evil.

I agree 100% with the other posters who have commented on this issue. Dogs are not born evil, regardless of the breed.

They can have bad behaviors, but there is always a reason for it - abuse, neglect, lack of socialization, genetics, chemical imbalances, medical illness, etc.

Pitbulls really do get a bad rap through the media.

I have never had a pitbull, but I have met several (and have a neighbor who has one). Most of the ones I have encountered have been very nice, even friendly. The exception to this is a pitbull that lives not far from me, whose time is spent chained up outside or with the 2 teen boys that live there - and I've watched as they have thrown rocks at their dog, hit it with sticks and actually encourage it to be mean. (And the animal control does nothing to take this dog from them either!)

I have said it before and stand by it: ANY dog can become mean and aggressive - regardless of the breed.

And another point to consider: Here where I live, in a mid-sized city (about 124,000 people) it has been a growing trend over the past decade and a half - for drug dealers and gang members to own pitbulls. It is their status symbol. They (criminal types) only help feed into this bad reputation for pitbulls. They make their dogs mean on purpose.

A dog who has been made to be mean and attack (purposely done by provocation from their owners) WILL most likely bite one day. It wasn't because the dog was evil or a bad dog. It's because of the owners - who decided that a dog would make a good weapon - and made it into a monster.

It's sad for the dogs and the innocent people who get injured by them.

So what is the real answer? Identify the real culprits behind this growing problem - and then address those issues with tougher penalties and restrictions.

By the way - I am not for banning pitbulls! (Just needed to add that). I just think that if there is ever a complaint filed, it should be investigated and a treatment plan accorded - be it the removal of that dog from the home and training for the dog followed by placement into an appropriate home - or banning that person/family from owning a dog, etc. Stop the dog-fighting. Make it illegal for felons to own any aggressive or potentially aggressive dogs - just like they are banned from owning a gun!

It won't completely wipe out the problem, but it may help to seriously reduce the number of dog bites.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to share my thoughts on it.

my mother's boston terrier is 10x meaner than my pit was.

I agree in that it does depend on the dog, not necessarily the breed. But, pits have a greater strike record or so it seems maybe because when they do attack they are known to kill and do great damage. :help: Huskies in Alaska have a great strike and kill record too and generally they are very tame.

We once had a cocker spaniel (from another party) who was very mean to all but our family. She tried to bite anyone else. She did have one litter when we bred her with a male. Of those pups from the beginning two out of six were also of volitile temperament and we had treated them well. Genetics can be part of it as well as environment.

You're exactly right, genetics can play an important role in temperament...so why on earth did you breed that dog? There are far too many nice dogs in this world suffering and dying in our animal shelters because people breed so-so or mean animals in their homes and back yards.

Pits have very specific personalities. Like any other purebred dog they were bred for a purpose and so their attitudes tend to be in line with that. That doesn't mean they're all awful. I would love to own a pit someday (I've fostered and bottle raised a couple) but it will be the exact right dog. There's a huge responsibility to owning one of these dogs as well because of the stigma. People don't think when they see one they just react. There's a lot that nurture brings to an animal's temperament, but nature does play a role. Humans are the only ones at fault for that role though, not the dog.

you have to look at 2 things. 1) enviroment 2)genetics

Unfortunatly, pits have been bred to fight. They are great with ppl but sometimes thier genetics kicks in, expecially if there's another dog (2 legs=friend, 4 legs=comptition). It would be foolish to think these dogs will NEVER attack, b/c they were bred to fight. They make great pets, but you have to look at genetics. Pits are normally better in one dog homes.
