When I was a kid being forced into a Baptist church, we were told that movies and mass entertainment were the " work of the devil" We were alos told that we should not watch the Academy awards because it was all "the Devil's work"

Being an inspiring filmmaker, I watched it anyway and have not missed it once since I was 14. Some see this as a "Slap" in the face to the church authority, that was forced upon me, but I , like Jesus, resisted that authority for the good of myself and mankind . :)

DO people in the Baptist faith still believe that going to movies and watching academy awards is a sin ? If so, do people do it anyway and pretend they don't , or do they really stay away from these things ?

I don't think it's a sin per se. Getting awards for a job well done is a fact of life. Faithful Christians will also be getting awards for their works when they get to Heaven.
There's a lot of good clean movies and they shouldn't be lumped with bad movies. God gives us all different talents and gifts to use for him. Any Christian no matter what field of work they're in, should let their work be honoring to God and also continually thank him for their talents & gifts he gave. A good Christian movie I watched recently was "Facing The Giants" it was God honoring and also is encouraging to Christians.

You are being serious?? I am always wondering where people find this stuff.

To answer your question, no it's not a sin to watch movies, the oscars, tv or what not.

The issue is whether it is uplifting to God or not. In other words, will I watch Extreme House Makeover, which is uplifting or Depserate Housewives which is not.

I've heard about this legalistic doctrine being preached in some Baptist churches, but it is the exception rather than the norm. At my old Baptist church, no one ever taught that movies or mass media were sinful. In fact, when I was involved in the church's college ministry, we used to have movie nights several times a semester.

Personally I think the Oscars are stupid (no offense intended to you). But they aren't "the devil's work."

Very good movie I will watch it probably a few more times before we return it!! I love the message put forth!

As for everything else you watch does it openly oppose God?? It is very hard to find shows on TV and movies that glorify God these days I think that is part of the reason I am drawn to the older tv shows like Leave it to Beaver and The Andy Griffith show. But I would say just try to stay away from things that are going put things you dont want in your mind! Once you have seen it you will most likely never forget it! And when you dont want it to pop into your mind it will! So if it means not watching TV then so be it but that is for you to decide! Like I said there are very few shows I watch! I usually only watch TV on Fridays with my family and then it is Monk and Phych. As for movies there are aton of movies I watch, but I look for the ones without the content that I dont want in my mind! Well hope this was helpful in some small way! God bless, Chris

Movies in themselfs are not sinful, I watch alot of Christian movies, but if you turn on the TV 95% of the stuff you watch has sinful behavior in it. You can barely turn the channel without seeing sexual behavior. In essence watching the t.v. or watching a movie is not sinful, but King David said that he would put no evil thing before his eyes, we know that a little leven leveneth the whole lump. Personally I like to avoid watching sinful things because I know they have a huge affect on my spiritual walk with the Lord. If someone chooses to watch T.V. but doesnt have time to pick up their Bible or Pray is this of the Lord or of the Devil??

I just started attending a Babtist Church and this Sunday they announced that they were showing a movie that evening for anyone that wanted to come see it. Popcorn and hot dogs were being served. It was "Facing the Giants". As others said it is a Christian themed movie.

So, not all movies are "bad". And, some churches do approve of watching movies.

It is like anything else in life. It takes discernment to know what is healthy for you to watch and what is a bad influence.

Good luck with your career. :)

Facing the GIants is an inspirational film. Kind of like Chariots of Fire, which showed years ago that the Best Picture Oscar winner ned not have any violence profanity or sex, it had a story of how someone wanted something so bad that they found, through faith, a way to persevere and get it.

As for the speciofic congregation I spoke about, I did not know if it was the norm but it seemed that others in the town had a simlar viewpoint.
The way I see it, it was all about money. They did not want us spending money on "entertainment" They wanted us spending our time and money in their church. That 's all.
I could tell you some funny stories about things that I saw, heard and witnessed there, but it is not truly funny because people like that give Christianity, and maybe the Baptist movement , a bad name.

There's no telling whether the church where you learned that still teaches it or not.

That "rule" was probably based on some Biblical scriptures such as these:

Psalm 119:37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.

Psalm 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Matthew 5:28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

1Peter 1:15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, ... "

If we intend to live by the scriptures, we need to obey what they prescribe for as concerning godly, holy living.
These scriptures, and many others, teach us that we need to be set apart from the thinking of this world, and set apart for holiness unto God.

And so yes, churches in the past have been so legalistic as to set up rules and laws for people, and that's not a good thing, but I think they meant well.
It is not following rules and laws that saves us,
but obeying the Spirit of God in our every day life.

Not all movies are spiritually bad for you, but many are. They can excite lust, greed, envy, etc.
The Academy Awards can only be bad for you insofar as you see snippets of movies while you are watching, I guess.

It's up to the Spirit of God to tell you personally how He wants you to handle this issue, since you belong to Him, if you are indeed trusting in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to pay your way into heaven.
