  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are older shows better than new ones?

I'm talking the shows of the late 60's, 70's and early 80's.

I don't know, it just seems to me that the shows were more interesting and funny back then. That's why the networks that do the re-runs are so popular and maybe why fashion became retro.

Who doesn't love the following? What are your favorites?

Brady Bunch
Partridge Family
Star Trek *(thanks Glenda)
Gilligan's Island
Laugh In
Dragnet
Dark Shadows
Dynasty
Walton's
Little House on the Prairie
Bewitched
I Dream of Jeannie
Greenacres
Batman
Twilight Zone
Flipper
Avengers
Cheers
Golden Girls
Hill Street Blues
Knots Landing
St. Elsewhere
Three's Company
M*A*S*H
The Odd Couple
All in the Family
Hawaii Five 0
Ironside
Perry Mason
Happy Days
Charlies Angels
and so many more......

I'm not into most of those. Though, I like some of them. Here are some of mine:

Battlestar Galactica (the new one)
Star Trek (Original, Next Generation, and DS9)
The West Wing
Law and Order (Original, and SVU - to a lesser extent)
Space Ghost: Coast to Coast
Firefly

Of these, 60's, 70's, and early 80's includes the following:

Star Trek (Original)

In short, I think most TV is stupid, but I can't think of any time it hasn't been. There are some original, thoughtful shows, and the rest is junk. It's like anything.

I think a lot of the fond memories of the old shows is a longing for a simpler, relaxed age & time.. when we didn't lock our doors.. everyone knew everyone else.. and no one would think of taking something that wasn't theirs..

Ma & Pa Kettle sitting on their front porch.. rocking.. Pa procrastinating able the work he was going to get to.. *smile*

Not much 'blood & guts' stuff.. we used imaginations that were so much more frightening than they can show on the screen.. I remember a movie.. 1959 that I watched on TV.. Invaders from Mars.. A little boy is at his window when a bright light falls into the sand pit at the end of the fence line.. the Martins start taking over.. and at the end of the movie.. he wakes up.. only to go to look out his window.. and see the light going down in the pit at the end of the fence..

I like the old Twilight Zones too.. always had a 'moral' to the story.. as did the original Star Treks.. :)

Ooh, thanks for reminding me of Star Trek! That was one of my all time favorite shows. I should add that to the List.

Older shows are much better than new ones. Many new sitcoms just suck, and as far as I'm concerned, the last truely great sitcom was Seinfeld. Frasier is ok sometimes though. But my favorite old ones were old school Cosby Show, Who's the Boss?, Head of the Class, Brady Bunch, Gilligan's Island, Happy Days, All in the Family, the Jeffersons, Empty Nest (i think Golden Girls spun off of this), MacGyver, Full House, Family Matters, and Wonder Years.

what about smallville? that show ROCKS! -- and it's new!

Never seen it, not interested! I think being 22 may have something to do with it bro! Try watching some of the older shows and you might find yourself liking them.

Actually, one of my 12 yo niece's favorite shows is the I Love Lucy reruns. She thinks it's hysterical. And it is!:D

Oh yeah....I was thinking about old shows, and mostly comedies. I don't get into comedy much anymore unless it's old.

But as for new shows, Smallville is by far my favorite. It is the only show that I make an effort to see every week. I also like any Star Trek show.

They sure were as you can sit down with the family and watch them
No sex, violence, nor four-letter words at all it seems!

I know. And their were moral themes and wholesome characters. Family was important, too. I guess that's why I miss them so much. I do enjoy the new reality genre, especially as it relates to competitions and to crime drama with the special effects that are possible. But I don't like all the gore, sex and violence that seems to go along with it. Why do they have to do that?
