I have thought, maybe it would be better for students to more actively learn through projects, and not just 1 or 2 throughout a school year.

Learning to apply subjects into the real world, today students learn mathematics without learning the application it has in the world, and teachers will teach mathematics like it's an order of operation to simply memorize when mathematics is much more than memorizing a formula. As in there are reasons and why a mathematical formula works.

As I understand it, teaching styles have become more focused knowing that students each have different learning styles.

I know of
  1. Visual,
  2. Auditory, &
  3. Hands-on
  4. (There may be others.)
#3s learn best in the OP's suggested manner.

Everything gets taught badly nowadays; mathematics especially. Mathematics isn't meant to be about memorisation.

Schools limit instruction to an hour per class. There really is not much time to take students outside for projects and doing the math at the same time. To do so, would require students to leave their phones in their lockers.

The public schools my kids attended, do that. Why wouldn't they?
