  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Archbishop Basile Georges Casmoussa, 66, of the Syrian Catholic Church was kidnapped by gunmen in the city of Mosul on Monday.

"He has been freed and he is on his way home without paying any ransom," said Potris Moshi, an assistant to the church leader.

Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II, who had prayed for the bishop's release, was informed straight away of the release, said papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls.

He immediately changed his prayer to one of thanks, Navarro-Valls said.

The Vatican said that a ransom of $200,000 had been initially demanded.

Christians make up just 3 percent of Iraq's 26 million people. The major Christian groups include Chaldean-Assyrians and Armenians with small numbers of Roman Catholics.

Thy bounties, gracious Lord,
With gratitude we own;
We bless Thy providential grace,
Which show’rs its blessings down.

With joy the people bring
Their off’rings round Thy throne;
With thankful souls, behold, we pay
A tribute of Thine own.

O may this sacrifice
To Thee, the Lord, ascend,
An odor of sweet perfume,
Presented by His hand
