  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We are not to seek the intercession of any archangels other than Gabriel, Michael and Raphael. All other angel-names are found in extra-biblical books. Because we cannot be sure they are, in fact, good angels, we should not be seeking their intercession.

That makes sense. Sound advice. Anyone know where the idea of Uriel comes from? Enoch perhaps?

Hi

Innerphyre. I remember reading about Uriel in a extra biblical book sseveral years ago. I can't remember the name of the book thoug sorry.

If I remember correcty Uriel is one of the four angels that God set at the four corners of the world to hold back the four winds when He created the world.

Is there any official word on Uriel? I don't know much about him other than his name means "God is my light." May we seek his intercession, or have only Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel been confirmed as the named archangels (I know there are 7)?

You may want to pick up Fr. Fox's book, THE WORLD AND WORK OF THE HOLY ANGELS. There's a whole chapter on Uriel--only it's titled "St. Ariel, Angel of the Family. It seems that Mexico has quite a tradition honoring this angel, in fact, there is a large statue of St. Ariel the Achangel, with flaming sword atop Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City and he is considered a "steward in special service to Mary". And behind the main altar of the Basilica of San Miguel del Milagro in the province of Tlaxcala are ste statues of the seven Archangels complet with names.

According to the book, the seven Archangels are: St. Sadiel, (leader of the tabernacle angels associated with the Holy Eucharist); St. Ariel, (steward of family life, community life and associated with the Sacrament of Matrimony); St. Gabriel, (angel of the Annunciation, angel of the Incarnation and associated with Baptism); St. Jophiel, (angel of penitents, associated with the Sacrament of Penance); St. Gratiel, (angel of martyrs and devotion to God, associated with Sacrament of Holy Orders); St. Raphael, ("God Heals"; angel of medicine, physicians and wanderers, associated with the Sacrament of Confirmation); St. Michael, ("Who is Like God," prince of the heavenly hosts and conqueror of Lucifer, angel of the sick and dying, associated with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.)

Mexico even has a piece of artwork has an inscription dated 1841 when Bishop Dr. D. Jose Antonio Zubiria and other bishops granted a partial indulgence for honoring and invoking the intercession of this heavenly militia. Of course, once upon a time it seems that ALL the seven archangels were at least known in parts of Erope, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

That is interesting. It seems to go against what was told to me by various priests.

That seems to be an indication of Catholic catechesis, doesn't it. One person contradicting another. :sigh:

A quick look through the NewAdvent site has this remark:

"The only Scriptural names furnished of individual angels are Raphael, Michael, and Gabriel, names which signify their respective attributes. Apocryphal Jewish books, such as the Book of Enoch, supply those of Uriel and Jeremiel, while many are found in other apocryphal sources, like those Milton names in "Paradise Lost". "

I don't think the book addresses the origins of the traditions. It only states that a tradition of St. Ariel by name has existed in Europe as well as in Mexico. The book is from the Fatima Family Apostolate. Says that copies may be obtained from Fatima Family Apostolate, P.O. Box 55, Redfield, S.D. 57469. It includes a prayer to St. Ariel and an Act of Dedication of the Family to the Holy Angels.
