In Greek, we refer to the saints as "agios" the holy ones. St. Michael the Archangel is a holy one of God - an Archangel so not a human. He has beingness nevertheless. He exists but in a different realm than we do, although he can assume human form so that we can see him and converse with him.

Sanctus and Hagios translate both "saint" and "holy" -- Santa Cruz, California, was founded on the Feast of the Holy Cross; Espiritu Santo is named for the Holy Spirit; and the great cathedral in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia, literally translates as "Holy Wisdom" (rather than being named after a St. Sophia). Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are not "saints" in the sense that Andrew, Basil the Blessed, etc. are -- but they are accorded the title as being among the Holy Ones of God.
