During the semi-democratic period of this forum last year I pondered a bit about a problem that had become actual. All members could choose for the majority of staff positions who would occupy them. The question was then : what elections system would provide the best guarantee that the most competent candidates are elected ?
I don't think the above problem has a satisfactory solution and it has been overtaken by events anyway. So I propose a sub-discussion of the above problem that is still actual : how does application posting influence the success of candidates and what does it say about their quality ?
The context on this message board is for example that an ordinary member would like to occupy some staff position and applies via a foreseen channel, for example by filing a moderator application. I would define application posting as adapting one's posting style, behaviour or manifested opinion on a message board in an attempt to improve one's chances to obtain a staff position.
On christianforums.com staff can find the last 200 posts of a member by using the 'Find all posts' feature, but not posts prior to that. Application posting would thus entail that a candidate assures that his/her last 200 posts are politically correct. The candidate could for example increase his/her number of posts by making fluff posts (like by chatting with Christbot) and generally trying to make a good impression.
Now my questions are
Do candidates who practice application posting have a better chance to obtain a staff position than candidates who don't ?
Do candidates who practice application posting make better staff members than candidates who don't ?
Is the practice of application posting desirable or to what extent is its use desirable ?
Is the practice of application posting unethical or dishonest ?
To what extent do you think candidates use application posting and did you, do you or would you ?
Would measures to reduce the effectiveness of application posting be useful ?
