According to Microsoft... >> About a year ago I got what I thought was a good price on an oem copy of Windows XP off an online business' website. I ran it fine since then, valid key and all, got the updates etc. so to me it was legit. Yesterday I get a message on my pc telling me my key is no longer valid, and I'm a victim of counterfeiting. Apparently the copy I got was sold off..when it was for company use. Microsoft says they can help!...and apparently their idea of "helping" is charging me $150 for something I already own...for a genuine validation key. At the time..obviously I thought it was all legit...but now that I know I was screwed over...and have an illegitimate copy...what would be the right thing to do?

(btw....Why are there 4-5 guardian angel threads on the front page....?)

That happened to me once. I told Microsoft they were trying to rip me off, and that I bought the software and had the license in front of me. After arguing with the lady at the toll free hot line for about 10 minutes, I think she just gave me a new license out of frustration.

Step 1: Contact the company you bought it from. But since it probably does not exist any longer. Step 2: If you have the box copy the seal from the box and send a copy of it and your reciept to Microsoft. It probably didn't come in a box with a Microsoft seal. Step 3: Send Microsoft $150 to purchase the copy that you already have, but actually do not own.
