  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anything wrong with sperm/egg donations?

I've just done a quick look on my faith's search engine on the subject and the answer is clear by principle. The Bible is silent about certain modern methods of egg fertilisation. However sperm donation according to Scripture is a no,no. You must not give your sperm to anyone except your wife. Sounds harsh but all life is precious to God, and life begins at conception. There are so many things to weigh up for a couple wanting children. So a spiritual couple would have to weigh up all consequences large and small.

On a serious note though, the law was changed in this country so that if you donate your sperm you may not necessarily stay anonymous, and could in fact be traced and left liable for maintenance costs. Free festival tickets is not worth 18 years of benefit payments

I haven't got any real moral problems with giving my sperm away, and i'd probably give it away for free if a couple really needed it, but as i understand it, my anonymity can't be guaranteed so i'm afraid i wont be making any donations.

I think people who donate their eggs and sperm are offering a valuable and generous service to childless people and are to be commended. Nothing to argue about, really!

If my boyfriend decided to donate, I wouldn't have any problem with it at all. Mere genetic similarity doesn't make one a parent, as far as I'm concerned.

I am not in favour of it but them I'm a very old fashioned person when it comes to many modern medical sciences.....

A pot of sperm and a turkey baster is hardly hi-tech :p

Such things didn't happen...to my knowledge...when I had my last baby 33yrs ago, and I haven't exactly kept up with things since then....so anything after that is new as far as I'm concerned.

Around here, you can get money for sperm and egg donations. I think it's $100-$200 for sperm and $1,000-$2,000 for eggs. Plus, you can donate multiple times. The only downsides are that men have to "save up" for the once-a-month donation periods (so no sex or anything else outside of donation) and women have to undergo outpatient surgery for egg removal. I'm not sure which is worse. :p

Back when I was a poor graduate student, one of my equally poor classmates decided this would be a great way to make extra money.
He was smart, in good shape, healthy -- he thought the sperm bank would love to have him as a repeat donor. But when he applied, he immediately got rejected. Why? He was a hair too short -- the bank only accepted donors who were 5 feet 10 inches or taller, and he was 5 feet 8 inches.

I'm just surprised you can get that much money for it. It makes sense that egg donors would receive a hefty sum, since it is pretty invasive. But sperm donation? Talk about a situation where supply probably exceeds demand by mucho orders of magnitude...

Hahaha, no kidding! ^_^

Personally i have no problem with it at all. Some people who are able to have children don't deserve to and those that can't have them may be the best parents possible. As someone else said (sorry I can't remember who and now it's too late to quote them hehe) being genetically similar doesn't always make you their 'parent'. :)

Then you have a very very bad search engine. The only scripture that comes close to addressing this in fact says the opposite. Under certian conditions it is not only allowed, but required. Look Up Onan and bother to read the 2nd and 5th books of the Bible where the vast majority of the Law is found.

I just noticed in a music magazine that they are now offering free festival tickets anywhere in europe in exhange for sperm donations. http://www.nme.com/news/festival/35078

It seems there is a shortage of sperm donations, so I was just wondering what you think of donating sperm or eggs? And what would you think if your partner did or was going to make a donation?

I don't have a problem with people donating their cells. :)

If my Nicholas were going to donate his sperm, I'd make sure he really knew what he was doing and that said kid my possibly try to seek him out one day if they can. But he'd never do that either, so I don't have anything to worry about.

You're going to have to justify that, because not all of us belong to your faith
