Elevation of the host is optional for Anglicans, though, isn't it? There are no rubrics referring to it in A Prayer Book for Australia. I don't do it.

Do other jurisdictions mandate it?

Many of the Anglo-Catholic Continuing bodies strongly encourage it, though I'm not sure if it is actually mandatory. It is actually not permissible under the strictest reading of the 1928 American rubrics (nor the 1662). I don't particularly have a problem with it though, but then, I probably emphasize tradition in my practice more than most.

All the rubrics say in the 79 American Prayer Book is that the priest touches the host or chalice at the proper point.

So this past Sunday was my first Sunday in my placement. All went relatively well. While poking through the dusty corners of the vestry we found a closet with a stuck door which when dislodged contained the old servers cassock/surplices, so that leads to more potential to establish a server ministry later on. My own surplice finally arrived yesterday, though oddly enough the postal tracking still hasn't been updated since July.

It was a good first day, and a number of parishioners introduced themselves so I'm trying to keep names and faces straight now. No major issues during the service itself, though we discussed one or two things to change as we ease me into serving, and the other volunteers get used to having someone assisting the rector.

We had decided not to meet this Thursday as our regular Thursday appointment at the nursing home doesn't begin until next week, though I'm almost disappointed as I did have a few odds and ends questions for them. In lieu of the general confession, they use a penitential kyrie with the absolution. Now the Kyrie is considered to be an acceptable alternative to the confession by the rubrics of the Canadian BAS, however the precise wording they're using isn't from the BAS and I was curious where it actually was from. There were a few other odds and ends I would be interested in discussing, but overall it was a decent enough day.

I had a few people from my old parish posting on my facebook that they were praying for me, so that was very nice!

The weirdest thing about the new parish: At my old parish, I attended the BCP service which began at 8.00 AM. I was usually up at 6.30 AM to have time for morning prayer and other devotions before leaving around 7.20-7.30 to get there by 7.30-7.40 depending on whether or not I was serving. The service ended between 9.00 AM and 9.15 AM. At the new parish, I don't get up until 8.15 AM, I leave at 9.15 AM (around when the old service was finished) and still make it there before most everyone else despite the fact that it's in another municipality. Who'd have thought that would be the thing that stuck with me!

I am not aware of any Book of Common Prayer that mandates elevation - most actually seem to prohibit it by prescribing other actions. That being said, jurisdictions that use a version of the Anglican/English/American Missal will find elevation in those rubrics.

Most Continuing churches typically have only one morning mass, typically at 1030 or 1100.

More seriously, CA, one of the real blessings of placements is having to learn to worship out of your comfort zone, and be flexible. It doesn't always feel like a blessing at the time, but later on when you go to a parish where you have to deal with things that are not as you would prefer, it's helpful to have had some practice!

I'm one of those weird types that is in fact a morning person. So actually sleeping in is rather weird for me. I'm used to two services (most of the larger urban parishes have two, being some split between a BCP service and BAS service or said/sung).

As for learning to worship in a new context, well if I can learn to live with bongo music during the Kyrie, I can handle anything.

On a more light-hearted note, one thing I hadn't really thought of but I guess might have expected was the number of unabashed ladies wanting to set me up with their grand-daughters. Reminded me of a Harry Enfield sketch.

Bongos during the Kyrie? That is something different!

Once we had an outdoor service (which made use of the contemporary service & music we offer) & some folks started a conga line. I was so embarrassed, though I'm not sure if that was more for me or for them.

I typically stick with one of the more traditional services my church offers, with rare exception.

You seem to be living the acclaimed BBC series, The Vicar of Dibley! I remember one episode that featured a parish meeting...Just like you're describing here.

We did eventually get some good decisions made (not just about the photocopier). But fluffy meetings are the bane of my working life. No, in the middle of a discussion about parish security is not the time to go off-topic to reminisce about your overseas trip!

R.J. Toomey, ordered from www.autom.com. I ordered one which was wrap style with flax in the threading - it was easy care and only about $60. It is decidedly tan and my mentor has recommended a return and order for something properly white.

Oh yes, that kind of alb that was so in fashion a while back - I'm so down to earth, even my alb looks "natural"! But if it's not what you want, you can try to return it. I don't know whether they'll be keen, though; it seems clear to me on the website picture that it's not really white (compared to the others).
