  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Like Astro Boy, Marine Boy, Gigantor, Prince Planet, 8th Man, Gatchaman and all that jazz? I am referring primarily to the stuff done in the sixties and the Astro Boy stuff done in the 1980s.

I know, one would have to be of some significant age to remember and enjoy this stuff (as I am) but was wondering if there were any of you around.

I do really like the classic 80s material, but I was never one for the series you mentioned, even though I did watch Astro Boy, Gigantor, and G-Force occasionally when I was around 8-10 years old. I also liked the sequel to 8 Man, 8 Man After (which is early 90s), but I've never seen the original.

Isn't Dragonball/GT/Z from the eighties?
Dragonball = 1984
Dragonball Z = 1989 (I think; not entirely sure)
Dragonball GT = 1996 or thereabouts; certainly mid-90s

Generally, though, American audiences don't consider Dragonball 'classic' because it was brought over here in the 90s.

I guess I am old 'cause I tried watching that 8 Man after and thought it STUNK storywise, though the animation was definitely more advanced than the sixties 8 man cartoon (the 60s 8 Man being in B&W).

I'm not sure how many of you have seen the new Astro Boy that was on TV last year and is now available in 52 episodes on DVD. Animation and artwork is excellent, tons better than both the 60s and 80s Astro Boy. But stories don't seem to compare to the old stuff. Osamu Tezuka seemed to have a heckuva lot more imagination and story telling ability. This new Astro Boy has his creator/father, Dr. Tenma constantly finding ways to test Astro Boy by making him battle stronger robots so that he con "evolve" and one day lead the robot rebellion against the humans. I found it disappointing.

DragonBall was pretty cool in the early 80s before it lost its innocence (the old guy in me speaking. I know you young folks will disagree with me but the newer one just seemed so demonic and violent).

Well, sorry to ramble. I'm just a classic anime lover.

Nah, I'm kinda a newbie to anime, and haven't been able to see too much of it. But, I'll agree with you, I personally thought DragonBall was the best one in the series. Z was cool, too, up until after the Cell saga when it sorta died in my opinion.

But, sorry, I haven't seen much old-school anime.

I was in Japan when it first came out and watched it in Japanese with my then 2 year old (now 20) daughter and my wife, who translated it for me. Never thought back then that it would become popular in the USA. Never even watched it in English except one or two episodes that I saw on VHS some years ago.

I have finally found someone of a kindred spirit.

I just watched an old 8Man episode the other day to my children's chagrin and wife's amusement (a grown man and associate pastor of a church watching an old B&W cartoon - perhaps I have reached mid-life crisis).

My kids in turn forced me to watch a couple of episodes of this wierd Ranma 1/2 guy who keeps turning into a girl every time he gets cold water on him. My sone thinks he's gay, but heck, what do I know. Interesting concept.

There was another even wierder anime that my daughters were watching some weeks ago about a boy who has a real, live girl attached to his right arm in place of his hand. Can't remember the name of the anime. Maybe one of you young folks can come up with it. All I could say was that either I am out of touch with the anime of today or they just don't have the story telling ability that Osamu Tezuka and others used to possess.

No, Ranma isn't gay. That's a very clear point, especially in the first season, although throughout the series they do like to play around with comedic situational gender role reversal. The water transformation comes because of a curse, although that was probably obvious.

Midori no Hibi (Midori Days). I haven't seen it yet, though.

I've noticed that most anime produced in the last 15 years or so goes more for the psych-out approach or just thinking up weird storylines that focus more on intensity rather than really involved storytelling. There's also been a surge in popularity in what Western audiences would likely call 'classic' or 'medieval' fantasy.
