  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I can't help but feel completely lost and overwhelmed when trying to figure out where to transfer. I'm currently enrolled in community college so I'll be going on to university as soon as my general studies are over with.

I'm kind of afraid to go to a university because I won't be as settled as the others my age who have been there 2 years before me. I'm also afraid I won't have anything in common with them as I'm getting read to be married soon and am not interested in the party scene.. I'd rather study and get out and get it over with. Then again I'm not exactly the prim proper goody girl. I like indie rock and dress kind of unique? Weird trying to describe myself. ANYWAY.

I would love love loooooooooove to go to a Christian school but they're all either too expensive, far away, or don't offer Spanish major with minor in TESL. :(

I just am getting more and more overwhelmed as it gets closer for decision time. How did you decide?

I knew what school I wanted to transfer to before I started at the community college here, but the process was extremely simple for me. I wanted someplace local and there are two schools here that are local -- one is a private school which I wasn't at all interested in because of the location and the cost. That left my school, which has been awesome in every way possible. When I started school, I made myself get involved in things and quickly made friends through Bible studies and large groups.

I'm sure you will adjust just fine, whereever you end up. :)

Do you have a list of schools you're considering? How many schools have you looked into that are on the final list to apply to? Does in state/out of state matter to you?

I was in the same boat you're in two years ago. I was stuck between going to a public university and a bible college. I wanted a more private setting, but the college I applied for felt wrong. Then, by chance and prayer I ws looking through a college booklet and noticed a nearby (to previous college) had opened registration. I immediatly contacted them and I feel in love with it. Now two years later I've never been happier and I met some of the most amazing people ever.

It is a little odd transferring, but I ended up becoming friends with all the incoming freshman lol. I think you'll find your niche just find since college is so diverse. You'll find your niche of people just like you, trust me :) If you go to a bigger school, there's usually more married young adults too and engaged young adults.

Private schools are expensive, but the college I go to offers a TON of scholarships that make it easy to get in for a lot cheaper. Just call schools and see what they have. Best of luck, you'll do fine :)

I am in the same boat as you. I dont really know where to go, but I know God is in control and he will open and close doors. He will never lead us down the wronge path. As long as we are following him he will direct our paths;).

I'm in the process of transfering right now. I'm about to start my first semester at a Christian University. I did my general ed at a community college so I will be a junior. I don't really know what it will be like since I haven't started yet. But it did seem a little strange that I will be going to school with people who are mostly younger than me. But I think I've mostly gotten over that by now... even though I haven't started yet. I think it will be fine.

Don't give up on your search for the right school for you, maybe there's one you missed. It's been hard for me to know where I was going... and last month I wasn't even sure I was going to go to the school I'm planning on. But I got an extra scholarship when it seemed impossible. I was considering moving out of state to go to a cheaper college... but I wasn't settled with that idea. I think if I found a good school that I wanted to go to I would move out of state for it though.

i'll be in that boat next year. i know i won't have a lot in common with a lot of the teenagers who will be going to that school because it is a secular school and partying will be a far bigger priority for them than it will be for me ;) but the cool thing about university is there is a lot of diversity in the kinds of people who end up going there. some are very young with no life experience. some are quite a bit older and are working on their third or fourth degree. there are also clubs one can join to meet people. i know the university i plan to apply to has at least three Christian groups that meet regularly for fellowship, prayer, and Bible study so i will certainly be taking part in one of those groups at least.

i'm sure you'll find some people there you can connect with :)

I will say this...I go to secular school (well I'll say a public university), transferred from a two year community college to a four year university...and the whole partying thing depends on where you go...I go to school in an urban area, and there's a variety of ages at my school-quite a few of my classmates have families, are married, have jobs, so it's not much of a party school at all. Christian universities are wonderful if that is your preference, but in the end, money was the determining factor for me, as many of the christian private schools were pretty costly. I love the fact that my school is diverse, have people from many different cultures, different faiths & beliefs. My school isn't my favorite place but in the end what matters most is that I'm getting a bachelors degree. lol. I've joined clubs and organizations on campus (including campus bible studies), attended different events...college is a wonderfully diverse place-keep in mind, when you graduate from college, you will often encounter people who are totally different from you. College is a good time and place to learn about people who are different from you and how to deal with them.

visit the schools you are interested in, try to visit on a weekday when classes are in session, not on a weekend...talk to students there, talk to the financial aid people-and most of all, look to God, he will direct you!

I'm starting my second year at a community college and plan on being there at least one more just to pick up as many classes as possible that are relevant to my major while the price is cheap.

I plan on transferring to where I'm going for a few reasons:
1) It is in state which means that the cost of tuition is not an arm and a leg and I won't have to move since I'm too poor to move any time soon.

2) It offers my intended major.

3) It is one of few universities that teaches Russian which I plan on learning.

4) It isn't all that too far away and public transit is pretty good in this part of the state.

5) It has really good opportunities to study abroad.

6) Being an Eastern Orthodox Christian means that I'm part of a minority in this country which means that the proximity of the nearest church is something to consider.

ANYWAY.
So what?

I work with a guy who is twenty-one years old, married, works two jobs during the summer and both he and his wife are attending the same university. This guy works at my restaurant during the summer when he's not taking any classes and I get along with him better than I do most of the single people at work.

So what about not being interested in the party scene. By the time you're in your junior year of college most of the students who have been going to the same college the previous two years will have probably gotten over most of the party scene and realized "oh crap, I have got to finish and get my major".

I personally know a few college/university professors. Most of them prefer teaching transfer students than non-transfer students because, according to them, the transfer students tend to show A) more interest in the classes B) do their work and do well at their work C) do well in tests, quizzes and papers and D) not panic completely around finals.

As for not knowing people, some universities have housing units specifically designated for transfer students.
