• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi Waylon,

I quit 7 or 8 years ago after trying about 20 times before that...

It could be that I simply finally made up my mind to do it or the fact that it was affecting my health so much... BUT, I used nicorette gum for a few months and I haven't smoked since...

What helped me after that, is I used to chew on toothpicks.

Years later I still get cravings if I've been around others that were smoking. But it's just not an option I give myself anymore... they always go away...

A couple friends who quit suggested this little aid to me when I quit, and while I didn't use it much I can certainly see how it could be helpful:

Take a regular round-stic Bic pen and "gut it" so you just have a hollow tube. (A hard plastic "straw" from a sports bottle works equally well.) Cut the tube so you have a section that's a bit shorter than the length of a cigarette (as if you've smoked 1/4-1/3 of one cig). Carry this little tube with you, and if you get a craving then "pretend" to smoke this-- it'll satisfy some of the hand-mouth fixation and it'll get you breathing a bit deeper. Hope this helps a little bit!

I like the fake cig tip seems like it would help.

I am trying to quit and one thing that has helped me so far is sunflower seeds, they keep your mouth and hands busy and they leave that salty taste in your mouth that makes your cig taste kinda nasty (as if it doesnt already ).

Yeah, I ate sunflower seeds like they were the last food source on earth when I quit. Very true about seeds making the cigs taste nasty!

I am on day 37 of my "quit" after 45 years of 2 packs a day. One feb. 13th. I went cold turkey and I have yet to regret it.

Lets see:
I learned to use deep breathing
Ate a ton of Altoid cinnamon mints
Ate a bag of baby suckers
Chewed straws
Tried Yoga
Learned to meditate
Took lots of naps
Tried to get some fresh air everyday even when it was yucky outside
Would not allow smoking in my home nor did I go around any smokers the first month

And most of all I prayed and prayed and prayed for strength to fight the addiction.

Have a great day!

Walking regularly is good. Doing things with your hands like craft work or something. I started smoking at age 11 and gave up at 30 so I was a die hard smoker. I found that not depriving myself mentally worked. What I mean by this is thinking ' well if I really want one I'll have one.' Knowing I could if I wanted to helped me be strong for some reason.

That makes sense, someone told me before I began to quit that your mentality really helps. Knowing that you might fail is part of the quitting process.

This method helped me in conjunction with patches. Ive been free just over a year now with a couple of minor relapses. During my last relapse i got sick of it after just 2 cigarettes and threw the rest of the packet away. Smoking again after such a long break isnt really that enjoyable. Its like learning to smoke all over again which is really stupid since no one ever really liked their first few cigarettes if they are honest.

Waylon: What a GREAT idea for a thread. I have never let anything get control over me till cigarettes. I started young and only recently have tried to quit. The 1st time I made it three months w/wellbutrin (SP?)( pills). My insurance covers this but not Zyban. I used the patches and they are good but cost as much as cigarettes, I started back in a weak moment when the enemy attacked with a couple of 1-2-3 punches in the form of my nephew. (MY BAD)

SO far I'm not smoking at work. That's the only progress I have made. I smoke all the way home while driving and then at home as well (my poor hubby chews tobacco and sabatoges my efforts cause he does not want to quit.

The best thing I have done is TELL everybody I want to QUIT. I'm trying to shame myself. I have good sense, I'm just weak and hooked. I can understand druggies and alcoholics alot better now that I have faced my addiction and failed to "just stop" Ya'll please pray for me to break free from this. OTHER TIPS WELCOME---I'll chew banana peels if it helps

Confession: I'm smoking more and more instead of less and less. I had 4 pieces of hard candy so far (1-smoke) and it's only 10:00am.

I have never let anything get this kind of hold on me. Much less I QUIT for 3 months and started back at a stupid moment of stress.

Just ain't doing good today with it.
