  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Any recommendations?!

Hello, everyone!

I turn eighteen in a few days (November 3rd, remember it ;)!) and I would like to spend some of my birthday money on some good books. I'm looking for recommendations on some good apologetics as I already have a few books—The Imitation of Christ, Introduction to the Devout Life—to study and to devlop my spiritual life.

I already have both the Catechism of the Council of Trent and all 3 volumes of the Baltimore Catechism and Chesterton's works like Heretics, Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Before anyone recommends it, I also already have St Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica :D! Though Aquinas is way out of my league :p.

Well, I hope this is a good run down to give you all a general idea of what I am after.

Regards,
Jon Paul.

Jon Paul,

If you're looking for apologetics books, I think the best ever written is Catholicism vs Fundamentalism by Karl Keating. He is the founder of catholic.com and is considered the father of modern Catholic apologetics.

Radio Replies by Leslie Rumble is a three volume set that literally covers every issue you can think of. The books are based off an apologetics radio program the authors had where people sent in questions.

And if you want a book on Christian apologetics, the best out there in my opinion is the Handbook of Christian Apologetics by Peter Kreeft and Ronald Tacelli. Covers everything from "how do we know God exists" to "how could a loving God allow people to go to hell." It's well worth the read!

Hope that helps! If they're not exactly what you had in mind, feel free to let me know more specifically what you're looking for because I'm happy to make more recommendations. There's so much good stuff out there! God bless!

You might consider buying Bible software instead of books. Before I became a Catholic I moved into electronic versions of my library. There are several popular programs, I bought an early version of PC Bible from Bible Soft and expanded through the years. I know it is not Catholic, but now Logos has many Catholic materials.

Happy Birthday!!

Seconded. I got this book about a year ago, and have really enjoyed it.
