I am in the process of scouting out colleges for my son, and we have looked at a few schools. But it is difficult to assess these institutions

Can anyone recommend a good Christian college? Ones that are reasonably affordable, relatively conservative, etc?

I received an excellent education at Wheaton College (Illinois, not Massachusetts). Affordability will depend somewhat on how much financial aid you receive. The statement of faith that the faculty affirm is here (Statement of Faith and Educational Purpose), and the community covenant that faculty and students must follow is here (Community Covenant). I'll let you decide whether it's conservative enough for you.

When I attended, a sequence of Bible and theology courses was required, and I have found the Bible and theology education I received there to be very important in my spiritual life. My mathematics education (my major) was also very good, and it served as a solid first step towards graduate school and a career in academia.

Moody was tuition free in the past. I believe it still is. You'll have to cover room and board. The neighborhood is safe and good. I lived there for years. There's several churches nearby and he can't get to most things on foot. He wouldn't need a car and public transportation is good. The beach is in walking distance and there's a lot to do in the area. They're marriage minded. Many meet their future spouse at school.

There's a yearly fundraiser on the school's behalf (Founder's Week at Moody Church). The alumni is supportive and committed to affordable education. You may want to add them to your list.

I can recommend Asbury University. It's both faith focused and academically rigorous. It is connected with the Wesleyan/Holiness tradition, which should be taken into consideration. It is also expensive but they have scholarships and other forms of aid.

I could recommend Messiah College. It's still relatively conservative (to this atheist mind), but even nearly 40 years ago, when I graduated, it emphasized how to think over what to think.

Grantham PA, near Harrisburg.
he doesn't have to go to a Christian school. Even secular schools have religious groups on campus, etc.

my son is not as religious as I am, and certainly not as religious as my wife

my son is not as religious as I am

This is worth thinking about. How does he feel about attending an explicitly religious school?

For me, I wanted to study theology and sing hymns and meet in small religion-discussion groups with my classmates, so I thrived at a Christian college. But I could see this being oppressive to someone who isn't as interested in religion. "Yuk, do I really have to take all these Bible classes?" It's best if being in a Christian community is chosen, not forced.

Has he expressed a preference for a Christian school, or does he prefer a setting where religion is more an optional part of campus life?

He hasn't expressed a specific interest in a religious school. But he would like a smaller school with a moderate student-body. He is into physical fitness and doesn't drink / do drugs.

As the parent who has to pay for all of this, I am worried about what happens on campuses these days. Back when I was in college, the students and school were pretty liberal with some hippies, but it wasn't crazy. Now I see DEI / CRT all over-the-place, divisive and poisonous identity-politics, censorship, intimidation, etc. I will pay for my kid to be educated, but I won't pay for him to be indoctrinated. There is also lots of drugs and promiscuity on campus these days --more so than when I was in school.

so I am weighing my responsibilities as a Christian parent and role-model against what he wants to do as an 18-year old.

Milligan University in the NE corner of Tennessee. Between 1000-2000 students, beautiful location, theologically conservative, My son loves it there and while he does believe, he does not prefer to be immersed in Christian culture. He is very much in the "take your faith into the world" mold. Looks expensive if you see the full tuition charges, but they have tons of financial aid.

Looks to be relatively affordable when compared to a lot of other schools. Room and board is pretty cheap
