I am an avid reader, but I've never had an ereader. I've thought about it & I think it would be pretty cool. The only thing that bothers me is you have to buy all the books, is that right? I use the library often & really can't be buying books. I do think it would be easier on my eyes & easier to hold, too. Are there any free books available?

Hello there. You do have to buy the books for it just like you do a paper copy. However some models of ereaders allow digital borrowing of library books if your public library offers the service. I have an Amazon Kindle 3 which does not support the epub format which many library books are in. There are what are known as "public domain" ebooks out there that are free and legal to download. They are mainly classics that have run out of copyright. My mother has a Barnes & Nobile Nook and seems to like that ok. Mainly you have to buy the books for the device and pay for each book. There are ways to get them free buy that envolvs file sharing and such and is not really legal, however you can get many things for free, so it is a moral issue at that point. I can not post links yet so do a Google search for "mobileread" and you will find a forum about ebook readers that I use and it was a great help in helping me to learn about them and it lead me to the Amazon Kindle....that was my best choice, but yours may be different. They are not hard to use, however it does take a small amount of computer know how to load books on the device yourself. For example lets say you downloaded a free and legal public domain classic book, you would have to know how to connect the device to the computer and then drag and drop the file on to the device and place it in the correct folder. I think you would enjoy an ereader. I hope this helps.

I have the Nook. It's good for reading novels, but not so good, IMO for reading the Bible or any reference material where you will have to be cross-referencing or skipping around a bit.

You are right, an Ereader is great for reading but it is not so swift for flipping back and forth and using for reference books. I use the Kindle to read the Bible but not for Bible study.

Depending on which reader you use, and your library, you may be able to borrow ebooks for free. There are also quite a few online bookstores which make some titles available for free for promotional purposes. The one I work for, Copia, has some classic titles as well as 15 Harlequin titles, including Linda Goodnight's "A Very Special Delivery" from their Love Inspired line, available for free. Keep in mind, too, that even if you don't have an ereader, you can always read on your computer :)

Yes there are sources of free ebooks, however the Kindle does not work with them. You need an ereader that works with the epub format. The Sony readers and the B&N Nook will read library books. There are more out there as well that will work with library book formats.....I wish the Kindle did.

I have had the Kindle for three months now and i have to say, i have never read so much. I just love it. I find it easy to use, very light and love the way you can adjust the font size. It really is a neat gadget.

Amazon offer many books for free, mostly classics. But sadly, everything else has to be bought from Amazon.

You can buy from anyplace that sells the book that you want that is in the .mobi format. You just have to hook the Kindle to the computer via the USB cable and drag and drop the file in the Documents folder of the Kindle. :)
