Other than a few tourist walks through limestone caves in the Midwest, only one spelunking day years ago in the Absaroka Range in Wyoming, about a day or two march in from the highway. By carbide lantern light, I saw our intrepid leader, a geologist, fall down a muddy wall on the far side of a "room" next to a man-sized boulder. He broke eight ribs near the spine. We had to drag him up an 18 ft waterfall on a stretcher, then through a narrow opening at the top of the falls to get him out of the cave. One lung nearly filled with blood and water from his body. The weather was OK for helicopter transport, thank God. He lived. Long before cell phones & in wilderness area.
