My favorite artist. I think most critics consider B on B to be his best album, but my favorite is HW61 Revisited. I think it may be because much of Blonde on Blonde is simply over my head. Are you familiar with HW61 Re? The last 2 songs are amazing to me. Slip on a pair of headphones and listen to Desolation Row. It has been my understanding for many years that the melodic guitar was more or less a last-minute thing. My son found a website dedicated to just that one song and according to the accounts at that site C McCoy showed up at the studio thinking he was to play piano, but Dylan had changed his mind and gave that to another, so, according to them, Charlie just picked up a guitar and began to follow along, creating the melody on-the-fly. The result is obvious. If you just allow your head to follow that guitar work it could stand on its own. Pay special attention to the brilliant work he does during the 2 harmonica solos. And, as Thunder Peel pointed out, another great album is Blood on the Tracks. Dylan can really spin a yarn as revealed in Lilly, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts. It's just simply amazing how very fast the tempo is in many of Bob's songs particularly that tune. And the music in it sounds almost like carnival music. Listen to the way it rapidly winds up between verses. If you are new to Dylan you have many, many treats to discover. Most Dylan naysayers consider his singing voice to be the worst in the business, but if you listen careful it's the way he pronounces words and the way he strings words together that make him above the rest, in my opinion. " She fluttered her false eyelashes and whispered in his ear!".

I really like Highway 61 revisited. It's probably my favorite album so far that I've listened to. I'm up to Nashville Skyline now. I'm still listening to them in order.

On Highway 61 Revisited I really like Like a Rolling Stone and Tombstone Blues. Those are my favorites off that album!

Listening to all Bob Dylan albums from beginning to end is sort of like trying to read the Old Testament from beginning to end. They are of drastically uneven quality, and you are about to enter a period where they were awful. Let us know if you actually complete your quest -- or if, like most people who sit down to read the OT from beginning to end, you reach a point where you say "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea." Of course, the same applies to the Stones and any band whose body of work spans 40 or 50 years.

By the way, Rolling Stone Mag gave "Like a Rolling Stone" the #1 spot for best rock song of all time. Blonde on Blonde & HW61 Re. are very near the top of their best albums.
Merrily, just curious...what do you think of Desolation Row? I think it's all acoustic.

That big box set is way out of my price range, but I have the majority of his albums in one format or another. Dylan is one of those artists I can't help but buy pretty much anything they put out. I did pick up The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portriat the other week, and was plesantly surprised by how much I liked it on first listen. There are a few things on there that are a little silly, but by and large, it's excellent.

Bob Dylan has been one of my most favorite artists of all my days. HW61 and Blond on Blond were my go to albums and they both have such a special place in my heart. I had put down all my music from the past once I gotten saved, so his works were some that I had stopped listening to...
While searching through my girlfriend's Ipod, looking for something I'd never heard before, I found an album just title "passion" without any names on the tracks. It was some good, folkie-gospel stuff, and the last track I just loved. I though "man this sounds like Bob Dylan!" I looked it up and it turned out to be "Not Dark Yet." This was just what I needed.
It put me on a search to 'reconnect' with Bob Dylan, not going back to music that I had put down, but to search out about his faith and the music he created after getting saved. I stumbled upon an interview of his in a Rolling Stones magazine from '84 and it was greatly inspiring. I had always admired Bob Dylan for his apparent authenticity of character, which was a personal spiritual struggle I was having at the time, was I being true to myself sort of stuff... Reading his words, listening to his music not only help me to come to the conclusion that I am authentic, but also gave me comfort reminding me that God was there when I was doing my thing, listening to Bob Dylan years ago. His hand has brought me from then to now, still loving Bob Dylan, a desire unchanged just like God Himself :)

I've always been a Dylan fan. His place in rock music is monumental. This is one his best songs. Sometimes it takes a cover version by, let's say a more lyrically adept singer, to realize how strong a songwriter he was.

I've been a Dylan fan for over 40 years. "Blonde on Blonde" and "Blood on the Tracks" are two of my favorite albums. I'm looking for the boot leg series vol.10. I have all the others.
I've arranged to have "Blowin in the Wind" played at my funeral.

I've been a fan for over 30 years , I became curious about Dylan through discovering Hendrix , one thing lead to another and I took the plunge with Dylan live at the Budokan double album and that opened up a million doors .

My fav Dylan album remains Street Legal , songs of love and lament.

Budokan review

I don't think I've ever seen anyone else say they got into Dylan through the Budokan album. Good for you. And thanks for the link. I'd forgotten that it had at least the one positive review in Rolling Stone. Most critics panned it at the time it came out. For me, I didn't think it was as listenable as Before The Flood, but I still played it quite a bit when it was first released. I was working in a record store when it came out, and the staff was a bit dumbfounded by parts of it. Still, it seems like we sold one or two whenever we had it playing in the store. It's too bad a later show from this tour wasn't released. The band really came around and the end of the tour was way better than the Japan dates.

Hi Mark ,
The album coincided with my conversion and the words and melodies harmonised with my emotions , there was and still is a connection . I had gone from heavy Rock to Dylan in a wink of an eye , I have just about everything Bob has ever done including acetates and box sets , I'm contemplating the new box set to hear 'Street Legal' remixed , sounds so cool .

I do wish Budokan had been filmed , I had that free poster that came out with the double LP on my wall for years :)

I barely knew three songs by Bob until this album , All along the Watchtower (Hendrix of course) ! Like a Rolling Stone (again Hendrix) and Tambourine Man (by The Byrds)

I still prefer some of the re workings on this album , ' I want You' sounds so powerful here . I also prefer 'Ballad of a Thin man' on this album....

I could chat for days about this subject :D
