• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I do think that for the Christian, whether on meds or not (and many Christians are not expert on meds), there is no replacement for prayer and the Scriptures. We all need to engage in prayer and feeding daily on God's Word, even the healthiest of people do.

Its understandable to ask, but to concur with the other replies, a med that another found helpful may not necessarily be the best one for you. Ask your doctor and also ask about the dosage. I take fluoxetine - I am on a moderate dosage, but I felt very tired at first on it, and just wanted to crash out (that is just go to bed halfway through the day) I have to fight that somedays still - partly my sleep patterns became rather out of sync. Fluoxetine apparently has the longest half-life. It is more of an appetite suppressant than other ADs.

In depression difficulties with prayer are understandable, and also with reading scripture - that said the Psalms are a wonderful resource in depression.

I don't want to suggest the same things to you that you may have tried. But I wanted to copy this out from a book I have to encourage you. It tells about John Wesley the founder of Methodism, who also struggled with depression, and how the Psalms were instrumental in speaking to him in depression.

The Psalm as the Bridge between John Wesley in Depression and in the Joy of the Gospel.

In January 1738, John Wesley was himself a depressed religious man, a Methodist full of moral earnestness, a missionary lately returned from Georgia. He spoke of himself as 'in the midst of a great deep', and in 'bitterness of soul'. Like Luther, his realisation of God's gift of sonship to sinners came at a time of deep spiritual depression, despair and guilt. In the morning of May 24th in the same year he read, 'There are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises', and 'thou art not far from the Kingdom of God'. In the afternoon, in St. Paul's Cathedral, Psalm 130 spoke straight to his condition. 'Out of the deep have I called unto Thee, O Lord: Lord hear my voice. O let thine ears consider well: the voice of my complaint....If Thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss: O Lord, Who may abide it?... I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for Him: in His Word is my trust. My soul fleeth unto the Lord: before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch. O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with Him is plenteous redemption.'

'In the evening,' he says, 'I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldergate Street, where one was reading Luther's preface to the Epistle to Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation: and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.'

These two books, the Psalms and the 'Gospel' to the Romans have come together historically to lead many melancoly persons from the gloom of a depression to the restful, joyful, confidence of the sons of God.

That's from Frank Lake book Clinical Theology - He writes also:

"Amongst the one hundred a fifty psalms there are forty eight which are particular value to those who are prepared to let the Psalmist become their contemporary. The Holy Spirit will use these prayers for us, as He used them for the Son of God Himself, as a revelation of the Face of God and the Word of God, the mothering and the fathering of the eternal Source of Being."

He lists the following psalms as seeming to be of particular value for the depressed:

Psalm 23, 31, 34, 37, 38, 42, 51, 71, 84, 103, 116, 118, 142, 143

Take care and do see your doctor also if you haven't yet about the medication and let people how things are going.

While I do agree on some things thats been said, prayer and bible reading and music does help but its not a total "cure" for depression. Some people may need to adjust diet changes, or add exercise such as fresh air or a combo of things but again not everything cures depression, yes God can, but then again, we all are made differently and will react to things differently..

While yes try those things mentioned but also don't go thinking AD's aren't the answer they are tools like everything else, have to find the right tool to help deal with depression on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

I would personally and only my opinion is talk to your Dr, about the medication and see what else there is and what type of job you do for you to be able to function for that job ect... As some have said, AD so have some side effects watch for them and if they are bothersome talk to your Dr again.. Some medicine takes few weeks to work in your system even if for example you feel good in a week or two still take it consistently same time each day that also helps..

Just things I leanred do do, stay on schedule on med's so I can function and stay alert.. Best of luck

Dms, you have blessed me hugely! Thanks for taking the time to write that reply.
Laura, thanks too, trying out ADs is discouraging but again I will rely on God's guidance.
You have no idea how a brother or sister's words can encourage. Be blessed.

Mimi Beloved,

I was on the AD carousel for a looong time, always thinking the next one was going to get me to where I wanted to be.

It didn't.

Sure, I am still on AD's, but I have found that supplementing amino acids via the method the "Mood Cure" by Ross recommends really helped. In a nutshell, my Prozac was doing wonders for my serotonin, but my dopamine really needed a boost to---welbutrin helped, but made my anxious/overly stimulated, and I was worried by side effects. Instead of welbutrin, I know take tyrosine.

Just a thought.

I also really suffered from an inability to pray or read the bible for a long time - it was horrible but I simply felt to unmotivated and 'empty' to be able to do so. My prayers are still often 1 or 2 liners coming out like a cry for help when I'm depressed

I also found that the Psalms were great. I bought all the music from an Australian band called 'The Sons Of Korah' they have brought the Psalms (straight out of The Bible) to nice peaceful contemporary music. This is what I listen to when I am depressed. It is awesome how the Words of God can guide and lift you up when you're down. The best part of the Psalms is that they are so personal as they were often written at times of severe personal trouble.

How often the lines of these songs have arrested me back to the truth of God I cannot tell, but it is amazing to sing these ancient words when one feels down.

Have a look on youtube the sons of Korah have quiet a few songs listed there.

mimi, I'm not posting this to discourage you from taking antidepressants or to suggest that you should get off them. But I found that the diet steps on this website really helped me, and even though diet alone doesn't fix everything, it really gave me a boost:

Radiant Recovery&#174 - Dr. Kathleen DesMaisons, author of Potatoes Not Prozac, The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program, Your Last Diet

As for praying and Bible reading, I know it's hard when you're depressed. I know it feels like God isn't listening. But He is. Even though things may not change the instant you pray, He's always listening and He always cares.

mimibeloved, you really do not need those antidepressant drugs and your own body is telling you this. PM me and I will give you a presentation all about mental health including depression and talks about how nutrition plays a part in this and what you can do to better address your depression and raise your total energy.
