• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Was wondering about the people that are on these?
What is/was the diagnosis criteria for one of these...(your personal diagnosis)
Is there any other symtoms people experience other than the classic bi-polar symtoms of extreme lows/highs that would not be classicfied as schizophrenia but still fall under the BP1 categorie and ultimatly have good criteria for these meds?

Hey, Iam bp 2, nothing else diagnosed. i have been on atypical antipsychotics on and off as an adjunctive treatment to my mood stabilizer. At times we utilized them in hopes of using their sedation to helps with sleep as well. None of them did much for me. That's just me though! I do know of many others with bp 1 and 2 who haVE BEEN ON THEM. i HAVE ALSO KNOW THOSE WITH SHIZOAFFEECTIVE DISORDER that haVE had to be on both a mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic. If I have learned anything ove the years is that there are many similarities and many difference in this illness from person to person and the ame is true of how they respond to meds and who responds how to what med. So many variablities goes into it all.

I use an anti psychotic together with two mood stabilizers. I have schizo-affective disorder. So I get extreme mood swings as well as voices and hallucinations.

At first the doctors thought that I suffered from bipolar - because my mood swings were extreme as well as very rapid but the voices and hallucinations didn't leave me so the doctors had no choice but label me schizo-affective.

I'm BP2... and I'm on the highest dose of both a mood stabilizer (Lamictal) and an antipsychotic (Geodon). If I'm not on Lamictal, I get massive mood swings that cause me to go from being mildly depressed to close to attempting suicide. If I'm not on Geodon, I hear voices that tell me to kill myself/others.

You know, I never before thought that they might be linked... hmm.

But anyway, I will soon be going on lithium (I'm pretty sure, anyway).... so we will see what happens with the Geodon then. There's been talk of switching me to Seroquel as well. And Risperdal is another newer atypical AP, I think.

Isn't there some sort of deal where lithium doesn't interact well with some antipsychotics? Guess that's slightly off topic, but I thought I'd ask anyway. :sorry:

I don't believe that to be the case but your doctor would definitely know.

Edit: now that I think about it I was on Risperdal (atypical anti-psychotic) and Lithium at the same time

I know I am diagnosed as bipolar but was never told if it was 1 or 2. I also suffer extreame anxiety. While in the hospital, I was also diagnosed with, paranoia, psychotic episodes, and post traumatic stress syndrome (PTS). However, those symptoms are always much more pronounced while I'm in the hospital.

I'm on two anti-psychotics and one mood stabilizer. Like some others here, I am also on the anti psychotics for the added benefit of help with sleep.

I was also diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder as a teenager, which is a whole different thing from schitzofrenia, although I don't think my doc in the hospital treated it that way. I think he treated me for BP and schitofrenia and I'm on the same meds now as then accept for a few doses have been lowered.

I am bipolar I with Borderline Traits and PTSD.

I am on Seroquel, Equetro, and Remeron.

The Equetro is a mood stabilizer, Seroquel is an anti-psychotic and serves as a mood stabilizer, and Remeron is an anti-depressant.

To explain the diagnosis a little better.............The Borderline Traits are a part of Borderline Personality Disorder. And the PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
So, one is usually always triggering the other and therefore keeping on a constant up and down roller coaster ride. When I hear people say they are level, I have no idea what that is.

I'm bipolar II and am on an atypical antipsychotic seroquel. Like others have said it helps with sleep problems and also anxiety/anger. I've never been "psychotic". That means a break with reality right? I was freaked when they put me on an antispychotic but trusted the doctor new what he was doing.

Ya see I don't have sleeping problems...
I might get up once my eyes open if I'm manic at the time but I don't have a problem getting to sleep and I usually sleep-in if I can...but that's because I quit smokin pot...before that...I was always up...I could never sleep.
But anyways...my diagnosis has been buggin me latly...I can't really figure it out...I don't know if i'm a full blown schizo or just BP1...but I feel disconnected alot of the time and very emotionaly parinod...like I feed off of others emotional tone...I'm also in a depressive state most of the time...my parinoa has me so pre-occupied the manics are short lived when they come on...even though I may get a manic period 5 times out of the day...

Thanks for the responces everyone.
