  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here is the link to a book promoted on the AiG site, which they say is information every Christian should have:

http://www.answersingenesis.org/home/alienintrusion.asp

In the book:

Bates contends that aliens are actually fallen angels who are
not extraterrestrial in nature, but rather interdimensional.
He said he is troubled by the idea of "benevolent ETs," that
has been propagated in the UFO literature, and questioned how
aliens could be abducting people for any helpful purpose.

He noted that some people had been able to stop alien abductions
from taking place (as described at alienresistance.org) by
invoking the name of Christ. He suggested that this lends
credence to the idea that the aliens are demonic in nature,
and thus susceptible to invocations that run counter to them.
He concluded that some Christians have been abducted, but those
that adhere to a literal interpretation of the Bible are not.
Further, Bates believes that abductees are not being taken up
into actual spaceships, but rather being "supplanted" with these
images.

*sigh*

And this is view that many non-Christians have of us.

Well, let's hope AiG's recommendation doesn't reach the UK - or non-Christians will be totally convinced that ALL Christians are weirdos, off their trolley and to avoided at all costs!

Sigh! Don't they realise that they make not only themselves, but all Christians, and possibly Americans too, a laughing-stock??

Sigh. Everyone but those misguided Christians knows that the Visitors are simply those who brought our ancestors to this planet, understandably wanting to check up on us! In fact, they're actually angels in a sense, guardians of the universe. Those tests they performed on me were meant to make me immune to the coming radiological disaster, a Providential show of grace and mercy.

Quick your bashing! It sickens me to see christians acting this way towards other christians. Take your arrogant attitudes and stuff it.

So Christians can't question other Christians' beliefs without being arrogant bashers? Tell me then which one of us had enough hubris to say "stuff it" when their position is questioned, thereby questioning the other side's position? Irony abounds among Creationists.

Are we not called to try to correct error? When someone presents Christianity as credulous or even silly, should we be silent rather than presenting a more reasoned view?

It is not that you disagree with these people. It is just the tone of everyone's post in this thread, the way you go about it "look at those fools, they are so dumb, we are so smart, let us all join in and mock them". It is adults acting like kids making fun of another weaker kid. AiG being the weaker part here since their numbers are so small compared to the atheists pluss christian liberals.

The prudent thing to do would be to open your mind and check their arguments, and adress their errors if you find some.

Please tell me this is sarcasm. For those who support science and Christianity, doesn't it seem that all our telescopes and satelites would have picked something up "out there?" UFO's are only seen in the Earth's atmosphere and only seem to cause harm to the human race.

I would have to add my own *sign* too. For AIG to promote this book is, in my opinion, rather ill-advised. This really doesn't do anything to promote their cause. I don't get it!

Their cause? I'm curious what you think their cause is.

I personally believe UFO's are very similar in nature to poltergeists and other related phenomena. In fact just as mediums ostensibly channel spirits from the dead they also channel beings from outerspace. And the Bible says demons exists and live in the heavens (of course you probably think that's all figurative).

And there are many OECs who would agree with AiG on this issue so I’m not sure what the big deal is.

So what’s your theory on UFOs? Are they all just weather balloons?

Is the point of this thread to worry about what non-Christians think of us?

Is demonic possession a myth?

Well, first, how we present ourselves to the non-Christians IS important. We should be portraying Christ, and there definitely ARE ways of acting which can be a stumbling-block to the Gospel.

Second, no demon possession is not a myth in the least, but there is no reason to associate them with these type of issues. This is just irresponsible, and the fact that AiG would promote such a book astounds me.

Well it astounds you that they promote creationism.

I don't think we need to worry about what non-Christians think of what we believe in the sense that we are worried that they may laugh at us because we believe in demonic possession or in a God.

Our actions need to be our concern, even in this forum, on this subject.

Because someone believes that aliens are demons, should this be a concern here in the origins forum? When we find out how much each of us differs, I suppose that should be admissible as evidence to show why they are wrong on a completely different subject matter, right?

Not sarcasm exactly. Just goofing around. I do find it hard to believe that anyone would seriously consider UFO phenomena to be satanic, any more than they would consider Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster to be demonic avatars. It's not really surprising that, here as in other areas, some fundamentalists would be tempted to over-apply the "us vs. them" distinction in paranoid fashion. The "aliens are demons" doctrine is every bit as much of a crazy, wild-eyed conspiracy theory as the belief that all scientists are Beelzebub's lapdogs.

No, we should not be worried about whether non-Christians laugh at us for our beliefs, but we should definitely minimize the areas in which there will be stumbling-blocks. The problem here is NOT the belief in demons, but in the belief that they are associated with UFO's. Most people realize that UFO's are not real, and are associated with people who are delusional or just very confused. If this behavior becomes associated with Christianity, it can definitely be a barrier. Again, it is an UNECESSARY barrier. I am tired of having these barriers come up when witnessing.

As for what it says about AiG, I think it shows how credulous they are, and how little discrimination they use in who they promote or support. If they are willing to accept this type of idiocy as legitimate "research" and conclusions, it definitely says a great deal about their standards for "scientific" evidence as well.

I read a CNN poll that revealed about 80% of americans believe the government is hiding knowledge of the existence of extraterrestrial life forms. Wow you just called a whole lot of people delusional!

If what you say is correct, then yes, there are a lot of delusional people around, either that, or your government does not inspire confidence in the majority of the electorate.

Or both!

As a matter of interest, and a total tangent, do you have crop circles in the US?

If that poll is accurate, I despair for the United States. But, yes, I DO think that there are a lot of people who enjoy the sensationalism of such an idea. A lot more are just conspiracy nuts, or anti-government, and even if they would not otherwise consider the idea of UFO's being legitimate would do so just for that reason. Very, very sad state of affairs.

I will leave it to you to point the finger of blame.

John 8:7
"But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”"
