But this one isn't a fossil. Its still alive!

Sometimes, an old evolutionary trait sort of "pops up" again, like humans born with tails or chickens with teeth. That's the only possible explanation for this two-foot snake.

It’s still a snake kind! It’s just adapting not evolving! A snake never gave birth to a lizard kind! Umm… and… the lord works in mysterious ways!

Thanks for the post Aron. A pleasure as always.

That's a cool story. Hopefully, scientists can start figuring how this happened, and what mutations in the DNA caused this. It would be due to the Hox genes, right?

The hox genes themselves, or something else that regulates the expression of said genes, I'm sure.

I think they call that the distal-less gene. Because if you block it's expression you end up with something that has no limbs. Or a fly with a leg growing out of it's head. Also the distal gene in part controls things like the pattern on the wings of a butterfly.

Pops up again? It is a question of what is being expressed and what is not being expressed. It could be that something is actually blocking their expression.

Nothing has changed in 500,000 years, it has all remained pretty much the same. Esp when it comes to bilaterin evolution.
