I've been on a mission to watch more minisode series this year. And there are plenty this season alone, let alone all of last year, which was what really got me into them as a form of the medium
We've got 8 new series along with 3 continuations or new seasons of previous miniseries.
Tabi Machi Late Show and Kono Danshi Mahou ga Oshigoto Desu are especially short, at 4 episodes a piece. The first is a drama type series about people parting and then hoping to meet again, various little stories.
Kono Danshi Mahou ga Oshigoto desu is a bit of a trigger issue, since it's shounen ai. That's the gist of the premise, with a magical background of sorts. All 4 weeks in February will have it, like Tabi Machi with January.
Ojisan and Marshmallow is a fun comedy/romance/slice of life. Two office workers share a love of marshmallows, but one isn't aware the other is romantically interested in them.
Sekko Boys-Probably the weirdest: an art college graduate is asked to manage a new group of idols in the form of 4 sculptures: St. George, Medici, Hermes and Mars.
Rainbow Days is a nice shoujo based slice of life/romance about 4 high school boys and their various love life issues.
Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou Ii Desu kara is a bit of a parody magical girl series. This very sweet young girl is approached by a weird creature she meets on the way to school. It gives her a bracelet that transforms her into a magical girl: only her outfit is a swimsuit. It seems like it may have some shoujo ai undertones, but we have Madoka Magica to possibly thank for that trend. Then again, it supposedly existed long before that with Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura.
Ooyasan wa Shishunki is a simple slice of life about a guy who moves into a new apartment complex run by a middle schooler. There seems to be some romance implied, though it's innocent enough
Sushi Police is up there with Sekko Boys in the craziness, though it's debatably in teh anime style we're used to, since it's much more Western influenced, it seems, with the style reminding me of Dreamworks or the like. The premise is like it sounds: the world has created an organization around keeping authentic cultural foods and Japan's division is focused on sushi.
Oshiete Gyaruko chan is easily my favorite of the season, since it's a nice style and a simple premise of high school slice of life with unique characters that go beyond their stereotypes. There's the gyalko/fashion aware character who's not nearly as promiscuous as men think (she's actually a virgin, I believe), there's the otaku character, who provides intellectual stimulation and general knowledge about questions they ask (many of which are somewhat risque, I'll admit), and finally we have a rich girl character, who seems the least developed so far, but is part of what is the major cast of three.
If you haven't watched them already, there's also Itoshi no Muco, a funny slice of life comedy about a glassblower, his dog and their friends: Tantei Team KZ Jiken Note, about a girl and 4 boys in junior high who get wrapped into various mystery cases: JK Meshi, a fun little slice of life featuring high school girls studying and then taking a snack break (with interesting ideas, albeit tricky to do if you're not in Japan, with teh ingredients in particular being a bit too native). And Teekyuu has season 7 out, which I hope will be the last for a while, since I feel like it needs a break.
