  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I just read a blog that just put me over the edge. I'm trying to control my temper now. Ugh.

I don't care if people hate the immigration problem that the US has. You can thing it comes straight from the devil if you like, but the word 'wetback' should not be applied to any person. I also think that Hispanics shouldn't have to develop 'thicker skin' and just get over it b/c other people get derogatory remarks made about them. Or the term 'wetback' is just meant to be descriptive.
It's wrong and it's unChristian....and it's just wrong!! The author of the blog had the nerve to bandy about his Hispanic heritage in order to make his opinion...I don't know...more credible, and I find it extremely disgusting.

I don't want this thread to turn out to be some political free-for-all. This is not about the character of Hispanics. This is about the character of Catholics and how they should not use the term 'wetbacks'.

I agree its degrading, and sinful to use words such as that to devalue to dignity of another human being.
Don't let your anger consume you - if you do, then satan has succeded. I suggest you pray for him, pray for Hispanics, and then send him an email telling him (politely) that he has offended you, and should edit his blog.

That sounds extremely insulting. Besides, I really like Latin Americans, and the whole Latin American culture. All of the insulting names for people of different ethnicities (grease ball, spic, chink, etc..) are extremely stupid things to say. If you think about it, who is it insulting? These people are just insulting their own intelligence by making such generalizations, and they are basically advertising themselves as bigots.

It is pretty sad how many American-born hispanics can be hateful towards recent hispanic immigrants. I remember on the "examination of conscience" lists I was looking through before my first confession, one actually even listed bigotry- something I found interesting. Let's hope this person realizes the sin of using such a word.

What made me really upset, is that this was on a Catholic Blog and almost all of the commentators went on to justify what is wrong with Hispanics and they were bandying back and forth the problems with welfare, how much Hispanics work, and how 'they' vote. The whole time MISSING THE POINT that as Catholics we aren't supposed to say words like that. I mean, how good does a person have to be before you decide it's ok not to say degrading remarks about them?

It's really upsetting me because I don't know if I should visit this blog or support the author anymore (he writes apologetics books)

My anger will probably subside, but I think this might be a sort of non-negotiable with me on the integrity of the author (that might seem like a bit of over-kill with you guys, but as a Mexican-American, Hispanic; whatever-you want to call it, that grew up in South Mississippi, this is a touchy subject for me.) By the way my parents never talked to me about racism or ethnocentricity (the most common kind) so I learned the hard way.

MParedon, are you hispanic?
Yup, both parents are Mexican, my mother and I were born in the U.S.

I do want to clarify about the author of the blog. He didn't use the slur himself, but he thought that Hispanics should get 'over' it. Develop 'thicker skin'.

I have to go b/c the Library is about to close, but if you PM me, I will send you the link tomorrow.
