Angels: What do you think they are?

What are Angels?

  • Real beings, with varying roles & powers. There are good (guardian) and bad (demonic) types.

  • Real beings but only act as God's messengers.

  • Catch-all title for humans who help those in need.

  • They do not exist in any form. The label is unhelpful.

As we recently celebrated the feast day of our patron saint, Michael, in church, I was interested in people's thoughts on what Angels actually are. I went to two services that day. In one of them, it was strongly emphasised that 'Angel' was simply the name for someone who helped (as in a stranger helping on a lonely road etc) while in the other, a more traditional picture was described.

I was at a St. Michael & All Angels midweek service once where a priest said "even though we don't believe in angels anymore..." in the homily, yet he still prayed the collect. Lame.

I went to a United Methodist church for a small amount of time and every Sunday I left wondering if they believed in anything. The pastor denied pretty much everything, except God. I often wondered if he even believed in God or if the pastor "gig" was just a good paying "job."

That's sad. All I can say in response is
