I like the non-fiction columns he did for religious newspapers before his death.

I also read one of his fiction books a long time ago, I can't remember which one, but I thought it was pretty good at the time. I think it was the one he did with a science fiction premise. The main thing I remember is that the protagonist of the book drank Bailey's Irish Cream so frequently in the book and with so much relish that I went out and bought myself some. :)

I really should look into reading more. He did a popular set of like mystery novels or something starring a priest, right? Plus some non-fiction theological books?

He's from the town I currently live in so I have heard of him and I think I own one of his books. He was controversial for some reason and I'm sensitive to schism so I haven't read him any.
A quick look at wiki tells me he wrote some "steamy" novels. with detailed sex scenes. Something amusing about that.
