A minister from a Dallas-area Baptist megachurch was caught in an Internet sex sting and charged with online solicitation of a minor, police said Friday.

Baptist megachurch minister Joe Barron is accused of soliciting a 13-year-old over the Internet.

Undercover officers posing as a 13-year-old girl communicated with Joe Barron, 52, of Plano for about two weeks. The online conversations were sexual in nature, police said.

On May 6, Barron suggested meeting the girl in person. He eventually made the nearly 200-mile drive to Bryan, Texas, on Thursday, when he was arrested. Police said they found a Web-cam and condoms in his car.

I've heard that when they do these bryan texas stings ( and it's always from bryan ), the cops don't even say how old they are unless you ask. So you could assume you're talking to a 20-year-old, and it's really a cop "posing as a 13 year old" on the other end.

Not that i'd ever meet a girl i met online, but stay away from ones from bryan, texas, lol.

You do realize that online dating doesn't always end in disaster, don't you? My best friend is actually engaged to be married to a man whom she met on an online dating site (and yes, they have met each other in person, many times...he actually travelled out-of-state with her to meet her family a few weeks ago). So don't judge every person who has ever tried online dating on the actions of this pervert (the one from the article).

Thats how they get you. In order for them to allow such an operation (at least according to perverted justice) they must FIRST call you. What they use is a voice changing device so make it seem like they are a young girl when talking to you on the phone. They are even usually the ones who offer to call.

Most people think that if you call then its not a cop so thats why they let down their guard.

I hate to break it to you, but being a Christian doesn't always cause people to not be perverts. I mean, look at all of the cases of Catholic priests molesting young boys.

But if it was a real 13 year old, they arent going to tell you they are 13 (unless you ask) since those sites (from my understanding) normally require you to be over 18, its your job to ask how old they are before it gets so far that you are going to travel that far to see them, besides I think most people would want to know how old someone is before driving that far and finding out that the person is way older or younger than them.

They'd probably lie even if you did ask... and what sites are these? lol. If this happened on an 18 year old + only site then i don't see how the cops have a case. We'd need more information to judge though, as far as i know the cops havn't released the transcripts or released where on the internet they found this guy... all i'm saying is that i've heard of other cases like this from bryan, texas and the evidence is sometimes really shady.

Of course I could be totally wrong, for all i know the "kid" did mention her age in this case. The other question is where they met. Basically, my problem with this CNN story is that it presents no evidence agains the guy except that he guy was arrested, which really isn't enough for me to assume he's a pedophile.

Ok, here's a better source. It's hard to find, almost all of the top google links are the exact same associated press story which has no information.

Bryan police said Mr. Barron had been chatting for about two weeks with the officer who he thought was a juvenile. Police declined to talk in detail about the conversations, but they said they were sexually explicit.

On Tuesday, Mr. Barron asked the girl to skip school and meet him, police said.
"Of course, our officers replied that they would," Officer Malinak said. "He had been on a business trip and was coming to see her after he was done with this business trip."
Two days later, he made the three-hour drive to Bryan to meet the girl at a parking lot, chatting by phone with his potential victim on the way, police said. Police said he was arrested without incident.
Inside the car, which Mr. Barron had borrowed from his wife, police found a box of 10 condoms, a Web camera and headset that authorities believe he was going to give the girl, police said.
"It is common for people that are engaged in this type of activity" to give gifts to the minors that "they are grooming," Officer Malinak said.
Bryan police discovered that Mr. Barron was a minister when he was asked during questioning what he did for a living, police said. "This is the first person that is this prominent that we've arrested" since undercover stings began in November 2006. Mr. Barron is the 12th man arrested in the stings.

So, yeah... skipping school to meet in a parking lot? that's a little creepy... lol I still think that the cops should release the full transcripts in cases like this, or at least the incriminating highlights.
