Ancient's Wake
BackstoryMillions of years ago in the land of Semoria there was a special race of people known as the Ancients. They had been blessed with significant powers known only to them, which gave them long life. However, they soon came to realize through breeding that their powers did not pass on to their offspring. Because of this they began slowly dying off, their knowledge of these powers along with them. Until it became known that they could actually "pass on" such powers to a deserving human in their infancy years, sacrificing however many years they themselves would have to live.
The downfall to this being that it was unknown as to what type of human they were passing on such strong powers to. Unfortunately, not all the humans turned Ancients took responsibility, and would become power hungry. One such Ancient, Odin, was born almost 200 years ago, and was given the blessing by his own Ancient relative. As he grew older, the powers corrupted him, and he went on a search to control creatures beyond the world's grasp.
Meanwhile, approximately 100 years ago, Al'Amora was born. She was the princess of the high ruler, blessed with the powers of an Ancient. One of the few still remaining; beloved of the people. When words reached of the destruction being caused by Odin, she went to stop him but it was too late.
40 years ago the Kry were unleashed. By using the planet's alignment, Odin was able to open a portal into Semoria, which allowed the creatures known as Kry to roam the lands. They're powerful beasts, taking on the forms of numerous animals with small tentacle-like things along their bodies they use to latch onto a human, and inserts a painful poison into the veins. The victims are induced with a high fever and sickness for 24 hours, most of which do not live through. And if they do? Then they are subjected to a slow form of torture, the poison spreading through the veins over a period of a few months, and once it reaches the brain, the victim undergoes hysteria. Eventually they perish, their mind unable to comprehend the madness.
After the Kry wreaked constant havoc on the lands for 9 solid years, Al'Amora was finally able to destroy Odin in an epic battle to protect Semoria. While this rid of the power hungry overlord, and a year later of the Kry, it sent the beloved Al'Amora into ruin. The Semorians celebration was short lived when the once kind hearted, strong leader turned harsh, and disappeared shortly after into the ancient ruins of Galbeth, never to be seen again. This wasn't all either. 10 years later when the world seemed to be at peace, the Kry returned, this time to bring corruption without their overlord controlling them. Panicked without their heroine Al'Amora and no way to defeat the creatures, the Semorians could do nothing but run and try to survive.
Another change during this second appearance of the Kry were the victims. While most still perished with fever and induced madness, a few survived. Instead of the poison killing their minds and bodies, they had enough strength to fend it off. These people were given the name Vysage; the only ones who were able to wound the Kry by use of their own infected blood, diluted, and spread on weapons. Though the only way to kill the Kry, they had to physically reach inside its core from a wound that has been inflicted. Finally, the people had heroes. For a short time. This didn't mean they are cured as the people soon realized. While they may have survived the impending doom of death, they were forever cursed with constant hallucinations, voices, and nightmarish visions that they were forced to fight off from time to time. If they didn't, and allow their minds to be taken, they blacked out for a short period of time where they wreaked havoc around them in an uncontrollable rage due to enormous pain. Because of this, they were painted as dangerous by society, and banished to an island off the coast of Bossas. Their heroes were soon turned into enemies.
10 years of that went on before, once again, the Kry disappeared without a trace aside from the victims they left behind. And once again, the people struggled to rebuild their lives and find a place of peace.
Present Time and Current Plot
12 years have passed, the last 2 of which had been derailed by the return of the Kry. The year is now 33 AF (After the Fall), and Semoria only had 10 years of what they would call peace before the reign of terror marked their lives for the third time. Portals have been found that seem to turn up and unleash the mysterious creatures, but people haven't been able to figure out how to rid of them. Some believe their only hope is to find Al'Amora as she had been their heroine once before. But even with numerous trackers and bounty hunters on the loose, their search for Al'Amora has so far turned up empty-handed.
Meanwhile, the Vysage are still banished to the island, forgotten, and King Thaddeus has taken reign, but even he cannot save his people from the Kry. The capitol of Mych has been turned to rubble where the great castle once rested. Desperate, King Thaddeus has sent his youngest daughter, Princess Anna, and youngest son, Prince Desmond, to Fort Mossol deep in the forests as it seems to be the only place of refuge. That is where our story begins.
Races
The Kry: These are the creatures unleashed by Odin some 40 years ago. They are unable to die by human hands, and only with the assistance of Vysage blood can their outer skin even be pierced. While sometimes they outright kill humans, most of the time they'll use their deadly tentacles to inflict poison into their victims. They are beast-like in appearance and behavior.
The Ancients: These people are a powerful race that is slowly dying off. While their presence may have been overflowing in Semoria millions of years ago, presently they are more legends than anything. Al'Amora was the last known Ancient in Semoria, so as far as people are concerned, they are no longer in existence.
The Vysage: These people are the victims of the Kry, and the only ones strong enough to survive the poison. While they look no different than normal humans, the significant difference are the lines along their bodies and faces where their veins show through a bright blue, a constant reminder of the deadly poison coursing through them. They are often subjected to hallucinations and nightmares, and if they are unable to fend them off, briefly black out and are hardly able to be controlled. They are considered enemies by many, and heroes by a few as their blood is the only thing able to wound the Kry, which seems to have a negative effect on the creatures. They are also the only ones able to fully kill the Kry by getting near enough to a wounded creature and sticking their hand inside in order to touch the core. With minimal regenerated skills, they are able to heal faster than normal humans.
As they are banished to the island, the Vysage's clothing has come from the skin of animals and their weapons are crudely made. Their resources are very limited.
The Vysage live their life really no differently than others. They create games or hobbies for entertainment, cook to survive, and they can also fall in love and breed. The drawback, however, is their offspring will never survive. The poison in their bodies will be passed down to their children, and as infants are defenseless and weak, they will die shortly after birth. So there are no Vysage children.
The Semorians: The Semorians are the main race in the land of Semoria. They are normal humans with no intricate powers or magic, though they do rule over the mainlands. Although many are skilled in weaponry, they have found over the years that their weapons do not work against the Kry unless it has the blood of a Vysage on it. Unfortunately, the blood seems to only effect the Kry when it is given willingly, and as the Vysage and Semorians have developed a hatred and fear towards one another, the Semorians have been rendered helpless. The only way to defend themselves against the Kry is by running, hiding, or barraging themselves behind strong forts, walls, and blockades. Because of this though the Semorians have learned to always have torches on hand as the smoke dulls the Kry's eyesight and sense of smell.
