• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

An Open Letter To The Media by Charlie Daniels [font="verdana, arial, helvetica"]By Charlie Daniels
CNSNews.com Commentary

(Editor's Note: The following is a March 4, 2003 letter by entertainer Charlie Daniels.)

I thank God for freedom of the press, unhampered by government control. It is a blessing, which is non-existent in a lot of countries.

But with freedom comes responsibility, and in the case of the media this should constitute fairness, telling both sides of the story. Opinion and agenda driven journalism should be relegated to the editorial page.

The American people need to know the truth, the whole truth, which means reporting things which go outside the boundaries of personal politics. Even if it makes the other side look good once in a while. I'm glad to see Fox News come on line; at least they usually give both sides of the story. They are often accused of being a conservative network but the truth of the matter is that this nation has not heard TV coverage which has not been tilted to the left in so long that when they do get fair and balanced coverage to some liberals it seems conservative.

For instance, the other night one of their correspondents interviewed some of the anti - war protesters asking them what the alternative to going to war with Iraq would be. The standard answer was, "I don't know."

So here are a bunch of young people out in the street demonstrating against a war and they don't even know why. Does this make any sense and why didn't Peter Jennings and company talk to some of these people?

And I don't mean that Fox is perfect but they sure report more of the news than the other channels do.

And why doesn't the media tell the truth about abortion, that it is profit driven and why can't they show a partial birth abortion? Too gruesome you say? Well just how gruesome is it for the baby who is being cruelly murdered?

And why do they try to pillory a man like Billy Graham who has devoted every hour of his adult life to good works, by quoting an old statement, which was taken out of context concerning Jews. Billy Graham loves the Jews and Israel, the media knows that but they just don't care. I think that's not telling the whole story, irresponsible journalism.

And what about coverage of the Islamic prisoners in Guantanamo Bay? Why don't they tell the military's side of that story?

And why do they follow Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton around like loyal puppy dogs ignoring Jackson's shady financial dealings and Sharpton's propensity for causing violence?

And why do they love to tell us bad news about the economy when there's also good things happening?

I know the reason why. The network news and many of the large newspapers in this country have a liberal political agenda and they know that if the news is presented fairly that you'll be less likely to swallow their line and go along with their thinking.

The front page of a newspaper should not look like the editorial page. Think about it, do you ever wonder why The Washington Post and the New York Times seldom have anything good to say about President Bush? Doesn't he ever do anything which deserves praise?

And do you ever wonder why they never say anything bad about Hillary Clinton? Doesn't she do something once in a while which deserves criticism?

Think about the kind of America these people are pushing for and be extremely careful how much of their coverage you believe.

Is it the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

What do you think?

God Bless America

Charlie Daniels

Well then chickenman, the execs of the news on the other networks must be at leat partial idiots as they've started using Fox as a model for their news...

let's see, Donahue isn't even on the air, he was trying to compete with O'Reilly in that time slot... CNN has Connie Chung trying the same thing against Fox, with very low ratings...

yup, real idiots

It's wrong for Charlie Sheen, Sean Penn, Sheryl Crow, Madonna, and the plethora of other to oppose the war, but it's okay for Charlie Daniels to call for a more "truthful" media, assumably based on the model presented by fox, which is partisan to the republicans. I'm seeing a double standard emerge.

chickenman

you have the formula reversed, it is

fair and balanced = (increased) ratings

Take O'Reilly's segment - he often has people represetning both sides of an issue on- if they'll agree to show up-
I don't see that too often on CNN or the other networks...

Where do you thin the idea for this Clinton - Dole TV thing came from?
Mimicry is indeed an indicator of success

O'Reilly having both sides in to discuss is something done on talk shows, news or otherwise. It's not new, it's not an inovation, it's been done for quite a long time. The Sunday morning press talk shows do it. Jerry Spriner does it. Crossfire does it. Judge Judy does it. The recently dead Talkback Live does it. I dont listen to NPR, but I'm sure if I did I'd find a plethora of other shows that did it. I'm sure MSNBC does it, but no one's watching. And O'reilly does it.

But there is one thing I notice quite absent from your discussion of O'reilly's "success". Since I hear people talk about how most major networks news rooms are "liberal", Why don't you discuss why O'reilly is a dismal failure compared to straight news programs or new magazines done by the networks? Why is it O'reilly always gets compared to Donahue? Why not to the network evening news? It's "liberal" too, isn't it?

OK...most of the anti-Bush folk are Democrats ....so how come with all these claims over concern for humanity, when Clinton decided to use the military (which he said he loathed whole campaigning) to carpet bomb Serbia to take the public's mind off of the impeachment hearings, they voiced no concern then? Where was it....
Yup, a double standard indeed.

Principle is a rather dangerous concept. In reality, it is impossible to work everything by having one big rule. Look at zero tolerance rules - kids get expelled after holding something that's not a weapon, or if they weren't a threat to anyone. Anyway, that's not the point. The point is that Serbia then and Iraq are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT cases. Saddam isn't Slobodan, and he's not killing all the Albanians (before you point out the case of the Kurds, why didn't 41 help the Shia/Kurd uprising?).
Like I said, you need to judge every case by itself.

Many people are against the war because of the lack of support by the UN and surrounding countries to Iraq. Not all anti-war protesters in this instance are strictly anti-war. They are protesting war with Iraq at this time and without UN approval and adequate measures against retaliation here and abroad.

To suggest that everyone that is against this war has been against all war is the same as saying that everyone who is supporting this war has supported all wars. It doesn't hold water. I supported the first war with Iraq because of the aggressive invasion of Kuwait and the support of the UN, our allies, and the surronding nations to Iraq. There are no such actions taking place now.

So, Clinton carpet bombs Serbia to try and get the people to overlook the impeachment hearings and that is fine with the very same peole who are now protesting a war with Iraq.
Makes no sene whatsoever, condone bombing one place on a whim and protest a war with another.
