  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

An Iowa city received a federal request to remove its rainbow crosswalks. It declined

Erm. There should be a consistency in road markings, so the request is not unreasonable, though one would want to know whether the highway administration are consistent in enforcing it.
They are not. There are many cities across the country with rainbow sidewalks. Some are temporary, some are permanent. I feel this is more about Iowa and its proximity to the 2020 election (Philly has had rainbow crosswalks for years).

IIRC, Philly put in rainbow crosswalks way back in 1976 as part of the bicentennial in front of the art museum. It had nothing to do with LGBT at the time though.

Given the number of crosswalk and other markings I've seen that are worn away and barely visible, I'm gonna go with no, they're not consistent.

I'm talking about the crosswalks at 13th & Locust, it's called Philly's gayborhood.
It's only the gayborhood if you lived in Philly before 2008-ish. Don't you know - it's "Midtown Village" now :p

I can see both sides.

We had a similar rainbow crossing installed in my city in a gay neighbourhood. Problem was it was painted across a 6-lane road that was a major city access route. Soon enough, people were stopping in the middle of the street to take selfies and blocking traffic. The local council had to bring in security guards to make sure people moved off the road. Eventually the state government removed it.

Take a look at the results of a search for "crosswalk" in Google images, crosswalk - Google Search. There's no standardized marking for crosswalks. This one is well within the normal range. It's more normal than some of the other rainbow crosswalks.

FWIW, in our state a legal crosswalk can exist even without markings.

A bit of searching shows that the highway administration has been trying for years to stop various types of crosswalk art and color, though with limited effect. The concern is reducing contrast. My non-expert eyes say that the crosswalk shown in the OP is more visible than the more typical ones, which tend to blend into the many lines and marks present on highways. I have no idea whether this particular incident is political or just bureaucracy. My bet is bureaucracy.

Many of the rainbow crosswalks show in the Google images do seem to me to be less visible than a standard crosswalk.

These are just pedestrian crosswalks. It's not as if major thoroughfares are entirely painted in rainbow colors. And besides, Ames is the home of Iowa State U. Everyone knows that college towns have a different vibe.

Conservatives claim to support local control. Let Mesa, AZ, and Oklahoma City, and Valdosta, GA do their thing. And let Cambridge, MA, and Berkeley, CA, and Ames do theirs.
