  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

(While I recognize that some of my brothers and sisters may not agree that the poll is encouraging, I would remind them that this is the creationist forum, not the TE, etc. forum.)

Interesting numbers. Probably the most encouraging is the statement

"Almost two-thirds of Americans who attend church at least once a week believe that humans were created 'as is' within the last 10,000 years or so"

http://washingtontimes.com/national/20060608-111826-4947r.htm

While science is not determined by consensus, but by discussion and argumentation it is nice to know that:
"About three-quarters of those with a postgraduate degree say humans developed over millions of years from less-advanced forms of life, while 22 percent chose the 'created in present form' option,"

The poll was conducted by Gallup. They are very reliable company for conducting polls without bias.

It also seems the article says:

while between 35 percent and 40 percent said man evolved with God's guidance. The idea of strict evolution without God has proved the least popular, cited by 9 percent to 13 percent of the respondents over the years.

and...
"About three-quarters of those with a postgraduate degree say humans developed over millions of years from less-advanced forms of life, while 22 percent chose the 'created in present form' option," he said.

Overall, I'd probably have to say I found the article more encouraging for Christianity in general than Creationism specifically.

My initial reaction is that this stat is sad as 1/3 do not believe the truth about how God created the universe. The positive is that there are more believers who believe the Genesis account than what I was starting to see. I am glad that I am wrong and there are more believers who believe Genesis than I thought.

I see no encouragement in the poll. It shows declining belief in Creationism with the younger generations. America, in the last several decades, has been turning its back on God and becoming hostile to Christianity, so I expect that trend to continue.
Not to debate or anything, but I feel that the creationists would especially want this pointed out:
The Washington Times Article said:
"There has been surprisingly little change over the last 24 years in how Americans respond," pollster Frank Newport said.

We're supposed to be encouraged that Christian belief isn't being destroyed as fast as one might expect???

People are stubborn, so stubborn that changes in beliefs take generations. But, the hostility of American culture to Christianity is gaining steam.

You might want to stop and consider the real possibility that many of the responders never actually read the Bible. I've met people that told me they read through it once and never picked it up again. Being regular church goers does not necessarily mean they know the Bible. Churches tend to emphasis personal repentance and salvation. The full implications of Genesis one and John one might never have occured to the responders.

I agree with the fact that 1/3 of people thinking the earth is billions of years old is bad, but I would have assumed it would have been worse. I always thought less than 50 percent of people believed in YEC. If we did another poll on this forum, I dont think we would get 66 percent of people who believe in YEC, and this is a christian forum.

Why not rejoice in the numbers of people who know, profess and proclaim the truth? Now, I know, those who believe don't necessarily actively proclaim it, but nonetheless, there are a lot of people who believe in the biblcial creation story.

And why be surprised at the growing hostility to the gospel of Jesus Christ? Seems to me He said that is the way it would be. But, hey!! I peeked at the end of the book. Guess what? WE WIN!!

Or rather, He does, and we get the benefit. So cheer up. It has to get worse before it gets better, and by "better" I mean "fantastic beyond all belief or description!"

Amen?

Well, because I know it's shrinking. I think being honest about a situtation is the best way to deal with something.

It seems strange for someone with a defeatist attitude to accuse me of being a pessimist.

I'm not surprised of the growing hostility because modern Christians are engaged in compromise, which is like blood in the water to the sharks.

I don't doubt that in the end "we win", but the hostility doesn't have to be so bad, and the "end" might be a very, very far away. And, it doesn't have to get worse now.

Thanks for at least trying to spread a little encouragement.

How is that more honest? That's like looking at a basketful of apples, and concentrating on the few that have bruises or are rotten, when you could be enjoying the good fruit.

There's nothing "defeatist" about openly acknowledging the fate of this world, of which I am no citizen. I am a citizen of heaven, and when this world is judged and condemned, I'll be home where I belong.

Again, Paul and others said this would happen. It is one way in which we can be made aware of the rapidly approaching end of all things.

Actually, the hostility does have to get worse, and so do things in general. That's just the way of a dying world. Its God's plan for it to be this way, so He can deliver us from it.
