"If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.......out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water" - John 7: 37 - 39'
After all the sacrifice, after all the ceremony, when everything expected, demanded by the 'law' had been fulfilled, Jesus stood and shouted with a loud voice for all to hear....."It any man thirst....etc.
How arresting this offer is! "If any man....This objective, this target, this portrayal of the life that is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, as a life out of which are flowing rivers of living water continually - this is for any man.
This is for the housewife washing the nappies of the baby, or the girl hammering the keys of her typewriter; the nurse walking up the ward, the businessman behind the desk, the student at university, the scholar at school, or the child in the home.....this is for any man.
Some of us as we read such staggering statements of the inspired word, say, "Well of course that does not include the like of me," and we think of some preacher, or Evangelist, we think of those whose understanding of the Word of God far exceeds our own, and we say "it is for them.'
We seem to forget what ordinary folk such men and women are.
That is the arresting thing about this offer. That it is for you; dear friend whoever you are, this is the intention of God for you and I wherever we may be today.
That out of our innermost being there should flow continually rivers of living water. This is an offer which is arresting because it is inclusive of all. This is what God has planned for your life and mine, by virtue of the indwelling Spirit of God. Are our lives anything like that today?
Ministering by the strength of the indwelling Spirit of God, to the great need of society today
