  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

THE LAST WORD (PROBABLY) ON "AMERICAN PIE"

As you can imagine, over the years I've been asked many times
to discuss and explain my song "American Pie" [June25]. I have
never discussed the lyrics, but have admitted to the Holly
reference in the opening stanzas. I dedicated the album
American Pie to Buddy Holly as well in order to connect the
entire statement to Holly in hopes of bringing about an
interest in him, which subsequently did occur.

This brings me to my point. Casey Kasem never spoke to me and
none of the references he confirms my making were made by me.
You will find many "interpretations" of my lyrics but none of
them by me. Isn't this fun?

Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I
realized that songwriters should make their statements and move
on, maintaining a dignified silence.

Very interesting.

I just got done reading the articles. While reading them, I couldn't help but find myself comparing the periods of music that occurred after American Pie was written to the consequences of the events and impacts that the song is interpreted to describe, and the social impacts and reflections of society in general in those periods of time as well. The rise of Generation X, the children of the Baby Boomers (myself included), the economic optimism of the 80s, the disillusionment and rebellion of Grunge, which seems to be a minor reflection of what the articles were describing happened in the 60s, except that people were smart enough to know what was happening and defused it before history completely repeated itself, and at the same time the signaling of an intensely nihilistic underground culture obsessed with dehumanization and the rise of technology, which saw itself leap into the foreground in later years as well (and is arguably still in the forefront).

Or maybe I just have an (over)active imagination and a flair for the overly dramatic. :D
