• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a few questions for you...

Do you still have a self-image problem? For example, are you skinny but think you're fat? I think that if you have realized that you look fine then you are probably not anorexic.

Secondly, do you often go days without eating? I mean, there is a difference between being able to go days without eating and actually going days without eating. As long as you are eating on a daily basis I think that you are fine.

I hope I can help. If you need support please PM me!

You can look online at the symptoms for anorexia to help you judge whether you think you might have it. Then I strongly suggest you go to your doctor, who can give you a more definite answer and get you the help you need. Anorexia doesn't happen overnight. It's a loss of appetite (that's the official definition) but in the history, I have found that many people suffer from it in slightly differing ways.
Whatever happens, know that not eating for any abnormal period of time is damaging your body and slowing down your metabolism, which is the last thing you want to do. I would suggest you eat small portions of healthy food (fruit, vegetables, some meats etc) to keep your metabolism up and your body happy.

If you can't see a doctor because you are 13, perhaps talk to your parents first about it and ask for them to take you.

Anorexia runs more deep then just not eating...
Its the reason why aren't eating...

*Do you not eat becuase you are afraid of putting on weight?
*Do you feel guilty when you do eat something?
*Are you constantly thinking about food?
*Are you hungry?
*Do you have a picture in your mind of how you want your body to look (unhealthy body types like very under weight models)?
*Are you constantly comparing your body to others and comparing what they eat with what you eat?

------------------------------------------------
If you answered yes to those questions then you do have a problem...
Anorexia is low self-esteem, it isnt just not eating like many people believe...Its all about the feelings and the unhealthy obbsession with food and body image.

Deep down you would know if you had a problem...you might even think that you would be able to stop before you let it get to far but thats when your already hooked ... if you dont stop now then you never will... after youve been starving yourself ...your body starts to not function properly (starts shutting down) and it doesnt take long before your vision of your self is distorted and the numbers on the scales are NEVER good enough...you want to be able to feel thin but you dont usually your belly gets bloated due to malnutrition aswell.

PLEASE GET HELP NOW!!!

Hi treegirl, I just wanted to say, I used to do the same thing as you, going for days without eating. I didn't think it was affecting me either. But it does. I started doing that when I was around 10 and now that I'm 19, I have hypoglycemia and have to eat at fairly regular intervals otherwise get really dizzy and sometimes pass out. I'm recovering from anorexia and you don't want to go there. It's a lonely, lonely place to be. It truly is better for your body to eat evenly spaced meals throughout the day. I just try to remember that this body is not my own to do whatever I want with it. We were bought with a great price and God expects us to honor him in EVERYTHING we do. As for feeling fat, what might help is just avoiding mirrors, at least for a while. Try not to dwell on the thought, because it's not from the Lord. And most of all, pray about it. Give it to the Lord right away and you'll be just fine. Feel free to e-mail me: Private message me for the address.

Hi again, treegirl! There are so many verses that have helped me with anorexia, even if they don't seem specifically to pertain, God's word never returns void! The best advice I can think to give you (besides praying constantly and reading your bible regularly) is to memorize a verse a day, that way you always have it going in your head to grab onto when Satan tries to tempt you. Here are some verses that have really spoken to me:
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:15-16

"So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:31-34

"So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature." Gal. 5:16

"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body." 2 Cor. 4:7-10

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Gal. 2:20

"But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead." Phil. 3:7-11

"I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." Phil 4:13

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Cor. 4:16-18

"The Lord knows the thought of man; he knows that they are futile." Psalm 94:11

"You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever." Psalm 30:11-12

"But I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice." Psalm 55:16-17

"Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:1-2

"The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearnance, but the Lord looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7b

There are lots more too! I'm praying for you, and feel free to pm me anytime!
